I am currently working at a beer store in Upstate, NY (so we don't get fat tire) and it seems like at least once a day someone ask for Fat Tire, then swears that it's the best beer ever and they get upset that we don't carry it. (doesn't make sense) There are so many better Amber Ales out there, like Flying dog Old Scratch. Maybe it's just me but I don't understand the hype.

I didn't realize there was any buzz or hype about Fat Tire.

I don't think it's the "best beer ever" but I think it has earned a reputation for being a consistently good amber ale especially for the price.

Lot of people attach positive Colorado visit memories to the beer? Easy drinking. Good with pizza. Affordable.

My dad is part of that buzz. No clue why. He's been casually drinking craft beer for a decade, but goes gaga whenever he sees Fat Tire anywhere (in Ohio).

I'm just breaking your balls. I'd say its a huge gateway beer for the craft beer plebes out there.

I have heard people compare it to Coors Light (the Silver Bullet) back before it had National distribution. People want what they can't have. We just got Shiner and Yuengling (again) here in MA so everybody who thought they'd like these beers has now had a chance to try them and find out.

I was those people a few years ago. It was my favorite. Be gentle to them, they will soon bloom in to beautiful craft beer nerds.

It's all good, but I know what you are saying about 8 years ago. I guess you can say they have been consistent Like BUD for all these years

It's the 4th best selling "craft beer" (IRI data) in country, behind only SNPA and SABL and SA "seasonal" (so, really the latter puts FT at #3). It is the flagship beer of the third largest craft brewery, and thus the largest selling craft beer that is year-round but not yet available nationwide, since NB still does not distribute to the northeast and some other states (in brown, below, from NB's website). Seems only logical that people who have visited other regions, or heard about it from friends in those regions, would be interested in the beer.

I can understand people love a certain beer but do you go into a beer store with over 1000 different beers and walk out with nothing because we don't carry fat tire

It's not just you. Fat Tire is terrible. In fact, New Belgium is terrible. For some reason, I keep trying NB releases and every time I realize it's not me, it's them. They suck.

It's "craft beer" for bud light drinkers.
