How long are they brewing this? I was suprised to see some on the shelves the other day that was bottled Mid-May. I think the first batch hit in March or somthing?

Say what? It might not be worth your dollars to you, but saying it can't be world class because you named a bunch of other DIPA's you like better (Hoptimum destroys several of those IMO) is quite a stretch. Although it is very bitter, I personally get more than pine (maybe the bitterness comes off as piney to you). I distinctly remember some tropical notes in the mix which is what I thought made it much better than last years. Maybe yours wasn't so fresh?

Edit:supposed to be a reply to VncentLIFE, this things not working...

I like all the beers mentioned and although they are different they are all top of the class.

I have to admit to a bit of a bias toward Sierra Nevada as it seems to be distributed fresher here than most brewer's beers. Hoptimum is quite delicious this year and to me seems much better than Hopslam has been of a comparable age, it just seems to hold up better. It has been difficult getting Hopslam here at peak freshness which is critical for that beer I believe. Haven't had the pleasure of trying Pliny yet.

Well I've had both Hopslam and Pliny and I prefer Hoptimum.

On tap at the Pour House in Greensboro.

I don't like Hopslam, IMO way too sweet as is Maharaja, at least this years batch was. I like Pliny and Heady Topper/Double Jack/Alpine, but Hoptimum is right behind those. Some pretty good company IMO. Lots of other stuff that I like, but only had once, brews like Citra and 3F, hard to comment on a one bottle sampling. Brews like Hopsickle and Mongo are a little different IMO.

This thread is what is so awesome about craft beer. We've all had the same beers and still have completely different opinions on each.

Hopslam is my #1, with Pliny and Hoptimum 1a and 1a(1). How great is it that we can yell at each other about how awesome a beer is?!

It's awesome! No, its way awesome! No, its less awesome, but still pretty damn awesome!

Hoptimum was good, but it seemed to let me down. I'm not necessarily sure why. It's still a great brew, but I prefer Hopslam, Abrasive, and Pliny (in no particular order).

Hoptimum was incredibly underwhelming--one of the most disappointing beers I've ever had, in fact.

To be fair, I firmly believe that any DIPA over 10% is not going to be 100% comparable to a DIPA around 8-9%. Hoptimum is over 10%, Pliny and Heady are both 8%, things like Devil Dancer and Double Crooked Tree are way beyond 10%. For the 10%-ish group of DIPAs, Hoptimum is about as good as it gets—but it is at its core a rather different beer than Heady or Pliny. In my opinion, at least.
