Disagree, that beer did not taste like bacon. It was straight smoke and way over the top maple. Drain pour!

I don't see a problem with what you described either. I wonder if the people that hated the beer even like smoke beers. The smokier the better, IMO. :sunglasses:

This is also coming from a person that despises Rogue so it takes a lot for me to say I liked it.

That poor bastard of a sink. I got a sip of one of these at DLD and it tasted like a used Band-Aid.

don't feel bad for the sink for that infection. i was able to stomach a few sips of the infected BA Yeti. if you are going to feel bad for the sink, then do it for this masterpiece (of sh*t)

it was about 4 months ago, but the sink still complains.

Drinking bottle 1534...not infected...pretty damn good...whiskey and vanilla and chocolate...good but not sure it's really worth the price tag.

perhaps slightly infected? if it was not infected, then it is worth more than twice the asking price IMO.

this beer, when done right is the truth.

Don't get me wrong I love Yeti and this was actually my first time trying the barrel aged version but IMO there are several other BA stouts just as good for less price.

It is without a doubt fair to say it is a breweries fault when you get an infected -bal beer. With a few pretty simple tests, a brewery can test for beer spoilage organisms in a barrel before they blend, bottle and release it. If it is not clean and they release it and it turns out to be infected, that is without a doubt their fault. If a brewery as big as great divide is unwilling to spend the money to have a small lab on site for things like this, that is their fault. If it is clean coming out of the barrel but gets infected on the bottling line, that too is their fault.

If it were a crap shoot whether or not a -bal beer got infected why have I never heard a whisper about BCBS being infected? It is because GI has an amazing lab on site that tests it before they blend and bottle. Though it may happen, it never gets in bottles and on shelves.

    ^truth!

Infected beers are a QC issue, and the brewery should be owning up (which it seems like they may be, by one or two comments). This isn't about beers that were left in the sun or in a trunk, this is about beers that have been colonized by a bacteria they were never meant to be colonized by. No one's fault but the brewery. GD's reputation will be fine, don't worry about it

Just to clarify about my two bottles, both we're bought at the brewery last October for GABF and brought directly home to my cellar. Sadly, both were infected.

Opened one last year at a tasting, beer was fine. Opened another at the Hampton pre-DLD tasting and was definitely infected. Almost Flanders Red in taste, which would have been fine if that was the intended style, but...
Emailed Brian Dunn at Great Divide, he said they have tried many bottles at the brewery and have yet to find an infected one, but he would be glad to replace it with a BA Old Ruffian. Responded to my email within a few hours and the bottle was at my house within 4 days. Hmmm, with all the bad trader alerts, I think I might see what this Brian guy is looking to trade for.

yup. all barrel aging has a chance for infection (probably can't be eliminated, but can be reduced). however, this does not excuse poor quality control. it's the business's responsibility to make sure their product is good. if it's not, they should not sell it.
