Bruery Hottenroth in Chicago?

I purchased a bottle of Hottenroth at Binny's in St Charles over the weekend. I just had some and would love to buy another bottle or two. It's very refreshing, especially on an 80+ degree day, and definitely a session brew at 3.1% ABV.

Has anyone seen this in Chicago? If not, I'd appreciate any Berliner Weisse recommendations. Obviously, it would only be helpful if your recommendation can be purchased in Chicago. I just discovered the style which for me started at Local Option, based on a recommendation. 666!

Word on the street is that FFF will be bottling their Berliner, Deesko. Exciting news! I hope we see more of this style.

    Cheers

If you found that on the shelf this weekend, that was last year's stock. The Bruery decided not to release this year's batch as it didn't turn out to their liking - see the listing for Nottenroth.

Until Pipeworks releases their Berliner Weisses, you're got basically two options: Prof. Fritz Briem 1809 and the Bayerischer Bahnhof Berliner Weisse. There's also a Brettanomyces Lambicus version of the Bayerischer, but I think it only went to Chicago and I haven't seen it on shelves in a few months. Amazing stuff, though.

Also: very similar style is Gose. Consider this one:

The profile shows a 500mL bottle, which I've never seen in the wild. You'll find it around here in the long-neck 'banjo-style' bottles.

I have access to some if you might be interested in discussing a trade.

Last comment and I'll leave, I SWEAR. Deesko was a good beer, but it ain't no Berliner.

    You missed some.

Bell's Oarsman, while not technically a Berliner Weisse, will work in a pinch. Quite lactic and tasty.
Grand Teton's Snarling Badger is in the market in 750's, which is their take on a Berliner. It's way too high in ABV for the style, but it's delicious.

And you may want to keep an eye on Goose Clybourn...

New tanks will be picked up Thursday/Friday! So Berliner Weisse is on the way!

Yeah, Snarling Badger does have a high abv for the style...but damn it's tasty!

I had heard that FFF was bottling Deesko. Expect to see FFF brewing and most likely bottling some more new brews and styles they've never done in the past in the coming year...

    So...it ain't normal?

But seriously folks, thanks for all the suggestions. I'll keep my eyes open for Fritz & Bayer and I'm already anxious about receiving the FWB email from Pipeworks, announcing the release of the Berliner.

I've had the Snarling Badger at Rabbits (the owner is a stand-up guy and damn funny) and enjoyed it. I couldn't really tell if it had a high ABV for the style, because I was drinking Erie Monster. The Badger was like a palette cleanser.

I did see Oarsman in BA's list of Top Beers by style. Although not traditional to the style, I'm going to have to satisfy my curiosity. I've never had Oarsman.

    Cheers!

Not exactly to style specifications, but Dogfish Festina PĂȘche is usually considered part of the Berliner Weisse style as well.

It was good, but don't expect anything resembling Hottenroth.

I'd say buy a single first; definitely a polarizing beer, and it's on the spendier side for Bell's sixers.

Wow, can't believe I blanked on this. OP: try this if you haven't already. Fairly close to style and pretty satisfying. It's one of my favorite summer seasonals.

    +1 to Festina Peche

Also - the Snarling Badger, while waaaaay to high abv to be true to the style, was tasty nonetheless... worth trying

With two recommendations, I'll have to revisit Festina. I had tried Festina years ago when I was actually looking for Aprihop. I only remember I was very disappointed, for the obvious reason (Festina != Aprihop). This was during my "IPA's rule!!" phase. I've seen Festina on shelves, so I should find some tonight.

    Thanks again.

It's probably my favorite Dogfish beer. Really underrated.
