There was a batch that was off in taste and color. I believe it was from 9/30 or 9/15-16 but I'm not sure which one. It was darker than normal, and something almost tasted burnt. I've had a batch since and it was back to AWESOME! Love me some HDR

Did you check the date on the bottom of the can? Super fresh Hop Drop (less than two weeks) is enormous. 2-3 weeks is probably the sweet spot. Month+ fades quick. I had a similiar reaction first time I had CC Jai Lai until I realized it was 4 months old. Had a week old one in Orlando and was 100 times better. You've made me thirsty...cracking on open now from 9/30...

This is what the caption from the stores twitter said: "NoDa Hop drop 'n roll canned 9/2/14 FYI for anyone reading this post the only reason we are able to buy this beer is because we found the brewery hops to brew more HDR" and I did check the cans. They all are dated 9/2. I had it right after I bought it which was on 9/11 oddly enough. I had it a week or two after that and again the other night. It was never great as the first beer but got more palatable if it was say the 4th beer, but nothing spectacular. Maybe I should try a newer batch. A great store up the mountain from where I am actually sent me an email and said they had some and even offered to buy back this batch. Even though I didn't buy it from them. Now that is a top notch operation, I just wish I lived closer to Boone!

Is this thread really about HDR or is it more about any "Citra hop" IPA brewed at a small brewery?

There was at least one off batch back around August/early September I remember, had it among several friends and it was noticeably not good. Had it several times before and since and it was awesome. Try another batch is my recommendation honestly. It's usually a killer IPA and actually fairly malty for being so drinkable I believe. Wish I had some right now.

AV pretty regularly has Hop Drop. They typically drive down to Charlotte and pick it from the brewery. The cans from yesterday were dated 9/28. I've never had a bad can of Hop Drop, but I have heard of it happening. I have definitely had a bad/old batch of Jai Alai, which I normally love.

This man is very wise, he knows the ways of HDR! And I have also drank the fuck out of it! Love it, expect a case or more soon! So dank!

I heard they switched over to a centrifuge, whatever that is, but it increased production. All I get from HDR is a fruity nicely balanced ipa. If theres a change its lost on me. So define overly malty? I'm sensitive to malty ipas and despise them, and fresh HDR is not malty, not in the least. I could see where an old can with that hop billet could turn, but it's never around long enough for that.

Hop Drop is and has never been overly malty. If anything, it's overly hoppy.

I might be able to have dental surgery after 4 HD'nRs in a sitting!

That is where I got this beer actually. Great guys, and what I am saying is not a slam on them, if anything its the brewery. We are fortunate to have them in town. To me AV are doing fantastic things. Anyway, I feel like I am coming off as some smug asshole on these posts. I just drank another one. I feel like its maybe missing something. Its a hop bomb no doubt, but I just feel like it isn't rounded out like a good IPA should be. It could be a sweetness factor, like malts not being where they should be. Maybe I will pick up one from a more recent batch, just as a comparison.
I am not sure where the overly malty portion came into the conversation. I have maintained the entire time that it is too hoppy. Maybe someone misread what I was attempting to say. But, you, I and several other people, which I have gone back and read and watched some reviews about this beer think its too one sided and overly hoppy. I prefer balanced beers and this is not one of them. At this point I am going to let it go. I really didn't intend to create such a stir, but I guess, that is how people are when they have a beer they love. To me, this is not one I love. But, it will not deter me from trying other beers from this brewery. I bought some Jam Session again and the CAVU, both are solid brews.

Haha! I guess I have a high tolerance. 4 of these is about the right abv and size to get me right, but I would need about 3 more 4 packs to ready myself for dental surgery.

Had some shipped to me in FL a month or two ago and I absolutely loved it.

I'm driving up to Charlotte tomorrow night and am gonna pick some up fresh from the brewery this weekend, so I'll be paying attention to see if I notice a difference.

Cigar City Jai Alai is the most inconsistent IPA I've ever had, so I'm used to noticing batch differences...

Interesting. I have wanted to try Jai Alai as well. Actually any Cigar City beer. I hear they may be coming to this state, so I guess I will get the chance.

Picked up some canned 10/06 last night and I'm definitely getting some diacetyl in it. It happens occasionally. I'll continue to buy this beer consistently. It's rare that you get a bad one.

I just had one from the very next day (10/7/14) and it was as good as ever. People love this beer for a reason. It makes a statement with hops, malt, and alcohol. Honestly, I can DRINK beer, but an HD'nR goes a long way!

I'm going to retract this statement. Upon drinking another can from the 4 pack, I can't decide if I'm tasting diacetyl or if more of the malt profile is coming through than I'm used to. Haven't had it less than a few weeks old in a while, so it's possible I'm mistaking some part of the malt component as "buttery." The flavor is there, but it's very, very subtle.

Agree. Bought my first 4-pack last week (canned 10/13). Bad initial taste, but this beer gets so much better and flavorful as it warms up.
