Just thought this post deserved its own thread since Utopias information is so far and few between. At the Max's Utopias tasting, the rep handed out this paper. Sadly, he didn't have the 2003 information included on the sheet, but that was a surprise to everyone. It was $100 for the five and the 2003 was $30 extra. Now, to find a 2002 and 2005. The tasting makes me want to keep up with Utopias now and start buying a bottle whenever it is released.

Here is my post with more information on the actual tasting, with pictures.

p.s. @stealth, here is some information if you are interested.

I always see one at my local store. I'm never actually tempted to spend $200 on a bottle, but it is such a cool looking bottle. Got to try a shot a few years ago and it was pretty damn delicious.

You should try to land a bottle of Sam Adams Millennium ( the precursor for Utopias released in 1999)

I've heard of Triple Bock still being on the shelves in some places. I would love to try some Triple Bock and Millennium.

A local bottle shop has one bottle, I don't know anything about it except for the price, $299.

How do people that buy this justify buying this over a bottle of scotch for the same price?

Interesting information there, I wish all tastings had this kind of information printed out. I saw a couple of bottles of Utopias sitting in a store in Springfield, MO about 4 months ago, but had neither the money or desire to buy one. The thing that kills it for me is the fact that they use Port barrels to age it because I absolutely hate Port wines.

Or a bottle of good bourbon, Pappy Van Winkle comes to mind, 15 year for a little less than that if you can find it...

I definitely buy a bottle of 15-20yr. Scotch (i.e. Speysides, Highlands and Islays) over throwing down $250-300 for a bottle of Utopia. Hell, with that money I could buy several bottles of Rodenbach Caratere Rouge and be happy for a long time.

Well, I personally haven't acquired a taste for Scotch, Whiskey, or Bourbon. I also don't have enough experience with other spirits. I do love dessert wines of all kinds though. Having had 6/8 or 75% of all available Utopias vintages for $75 is a steal though. Will I end up buying a bottle for myself, probably not.

That 2013 added KMF is so great!

Anyone know what the appropriate aging years for Utopias is?

Why isn't it just "Utopia?" That's my question.

Do you mean how old long you should keep it for or how old the barrels are that were used in making it?

For the same reason that you'd justify the scotch. It's fucking delicious!

That's not what BBC says on Triple Bock's webpage:

They can say and advertise what they want, but when you open a bottle and realize whats inside you know it wasnt meant to be drank 20+ years down the line......

Millennium on the other hand , like Utopias ages gracefully. But Triple Bock not so much

Well, now it's getting into a question of semantics, I suppose, but it seems to me the brewer alone should be the one to determine what they meant the beer to be. Others can say that it was "wrong" and should have never been cellared, or that the brewer's desire to brew a beer that would cellared for decades was a "failure". (I'll give you that those poor quality, port/sherry-type corks should have never been used for that beer- some leaked, many more break off upon opening.)

Did you have SATB fresh? It was a pretty controversial beer even when released and aging has mellowed it somewhat but even the reviews here on BA continue to be from one extreme to the other.
