So I open up the local coupon newspaper and there is a liquor store that advertises 10% off any 6 bottles of wine and 15% off any 12 bottles of wine. Another offers 20% off any mixed case of wine and 10% off any single bottle 750 ml or larger. Now as anyone who lives in NY knows, beer isn't sold in liquor stores, but it still pisses me off that wine drinkers get a break on a case and we craft beer drinkers only get a break when the beer has been reduced to a shelf turd [if at all]. Anybody else have a problem with this?

It's not uncommon for large liquor stores or beer shops to have one price per 6-pack, and a price-per-6-pack when buying a case that is considerably lower.
    Basically the same thing.
Lots of beers that are sold in both 6-packs and 12-packs have a much lower price per bottle when buying the 12-pack than the 6-pack, which is also more or the less the same idea.

In Norway we have zero discounts on beer regardless of the amount. Bag-in-box wine is cheaper than regular bottles, when considering the price / liter, but as for buying a case there's no difference. It sucks.

Quite a few places around here do a beer/brewery of the week/month with a discount. Sometimes even a free glass included and once in a while a brewery rep or distributor will run a tasting. Also get a discount on mixed six packs in most places.

Of course, this only works for me personally if the beer/brewer of the week/month represents something I want to buy in the first place.

Plus there are always the coupons, but I find in my area it is mostly BMC with a scant few representatives of better beer.

The mark up on wine ranges from 40-50% (vs 20-30% for beer), which is why tons of wine retailers can offer that deal.

Single/Six Pack/12 Pack/Case seems to follow that sort of discounting inherently for 12 ounce bottles and cans. Also I've seen a couple stores in my area that offer a 10% discount for purchasing 6 or more "large format" bottles of beer.

If anything, I probably buy more beer because of the pricing, rather than in spite of it.

Why isn't beer sold in liquor stores in NY? It's hard to keep track of all the idiotic arbitrary beer laws throughout the country. I missed that one.

I should have known there was a reason. Thanx. Now I can continue reading and checking for other coupons in peace.

Who knows. It's been that way since I've been able to consume. It may be because up until a few years ago, there were quite a few very small mom and pop liquor stores around. When consumption went down, so did these stores. There have also always been large "wholesale" beer & soda stores, different from distributors, where the only products sold were beer and soda. Of course, they really aren't wholesale, they just have a big store so they became to be known as that.

The liquor store I frequent has a point system. After like 400-500 points or something of that nature, I get a 15% off coupon. I usually use them for the limited Belgian brews and The Bruery Anniversary big beers.

BevMo in CA has a 5 cent wine sale plus 10% off if you buy a case, nothing like this for beer. I've heard that wine companies/distributors will give away wine if the store purchases so many cases. As a beer rep, we can't due to alcohol laws. Don't know how true the wine discounts are?

Tangent with a bit of relevancy. In Massachusetts, it was illegal to have alcohol shipped to us, so no beer of the month clubs, etc. They just recently passed a law saying that Wine can be shipped to massachusetts residents, but beer still can't be.

    Go figure.

In addition to different margins, there is a difference in the amounts being sold in each instance, too. While you can find inexpensive wine and expensive beer, beer is generally cheaper for a comparable amount. A bottle of wine is around 5 glasses and usually costs somewhere between $10 and $30. So, a case of twelve bottles has a retail value of a couple hundred dollars and contains about 60 drinks. That's just not comparable to most cases of beer. Add in the higher profit margin and it makes sense they would try to entice large volume sales of wine where they might not beer.

This. At the liquor store I work, the wine margin is even higher on a lot of wines, and I think the beer margin is usually on the low end of this estimate.

I read through and was going to say this if no one had. Beer is very competitively priced and wine options are so vast that smart retailers can find extra margin on some items and be competitive on others if need be. I am very fond of saying that there is more good wine to drink than people to drink it. This seems to be beginning to happen now in the "beer sphere".

He's right. Being able to see the back end of our computer inventory system, and the % mark up on wine versus beer and hard alcohol almost made me choke.
