Had a bomber of this yesterday. It was bitter to start but as it warmed up a bit some sweetness and hop character started to come through. Pretty good beer, though not sure if i would pick it up again, as i like my DIPA's to be hop bombs.

It's not a bad beer, but if you go into it thinking West coast style IPA with oranges you won't get the hoppiness you would customarily expect to find. You could call it a sweet IPA. I think citrus beer might be a better classification.

Damn that sounds pretty weak because I like the typical hoppy West Coast IPA's. Oh well I will still have to try it.

Just landed here in S. Orange County and finding it very well balanced. Not too sweet or dry and to think they added all this citrus it isn't overdone. Just like any "flavored" beer, the hop profile can be masked... However it still packs a little bite up front that lingers and aroma that is consistently gratifying. I am huge fan of their dipa since it is affordable and readily available.
Hopefully I will have enough to enjoy through the summer.

    Good but not great.

Well I had it and was pretty disappointed. The nose was so weak but the flavor was pretty good but barley any hoppiness for a DIPA. This beer actually reminds me of Whitewater IPA from Sam Adams. I actually think Hangar's Columbus IPA has more hoppy bitterness than Essence.

I agree, the nose is really weak and the orange is very subtle, but the taste is still pretty darn good. Very piney but lacks the citrus notes that you would think would be prominent considering the title.

Love your picture. I have a Nelson and Pure Hoppiness up on my beer row display in my kitchen. Alpine's beer's are so delicious.

That was a recent trip down to Alpine where they had Duet, Pure Hoppiness, Bad Boy, Nelson, and Hoppy Birthday on tap. Alpine is easily my favorite brewery, just wish they supply the ever growing demand.

Yeah their IPA's are world class. The distribution sucks for sure although I heard they are building a bigger facility so hopefully that will help. When I was there they had Pure Hoppiness, Exponential Hoppiness, Nelson, Hoppy Birthday on tap as well as other's. They didn't have Duet on tap or Bad Boy so I have yet to try those. I am going again in November for my birthday so we will see what the tap selection is then. They have great food as well.
