Hi There, I've been to Chicago once before 8 or so years back when my knowledge of the US craft beer scene was far less than it is now On that trip I was only there for a day but made it to the Goose Island brew pub at Clybourn I'm likely to be passing through Chicago again in the fall but for a very short period of time I've searched the usual 'bars to go to in Chicago' thread for some ideas but hoping someone with local knowledge can put together a few suggestions perhaps a little more bespoke for my needs !?! I plan to arrive at Chicago Union Amtrak at 10pm on a Thursday night I leave Chicago at 2pm the following day I will therefore be looking for a hotel within 5 or 6 blocks of Union station and as such wish to know of any good tap houses in this neigbourhood (say 15 minute walking distance) and preferably one that will be open late if possible (happy to stay up supping until 2am) Also ... on the Friday I need to find a bottle shop to stock up on beers for my next journey, anything in this area? Many thanks in advance Ruds
Probably the closest hotel in the area that I can think of is: Holiday Inn Chicago-Downtown at the intersection of Canal and Harrison Bottle shop with the widest selections are probably going to be: Binny South Loop on Jeffereson & Roosevelt Whole Foods on Canal & Roosevelt They're almost right next to each other and probably 2 blocks from the Holiday Inn
Haymarket is open until 2am and is at Randolph & Halsted. That is a little more than a half mile from Union Station.
Here's a map of what's roughly in a mile radius: http://beermapping.com/a/32262 Check out Haymarket, Publican, Au Cheval, Villains, Monks, etc. Cabs are plentiful.
Have to go to the Publican and Haymarket. Hopefully Haymarket has Mathias on tap when you arrive, great beer.
Warehouse Liquors has a pretty nice selection and they are located just outside the loop as far as bottle shops go. I try not to drink at bars downtown if I can because they tend to be a lot more money
Thanks a lot folks - that's exactly the info I wanted ! Big shout to Emerge077 for the map - most useful !
