Three Floyds Blot Out the Sun "American" Imperial Stout. I am not a big fan of black IPAs or hoppy stouts, but this one is sort of an exception. This is basically a blend of a double IPA and an imperial stout. If you are just expecting a regular imp. stout, you will be surprised and possibly disappointed. The blend between hops and stout are very nice. Getting mango, pineapple, lemon, grapefruit, and slight pine from the hops (think Zdust). At the same time, getting some dark chocolate, roasted malt, sweet carmel and toffee, and some very slight coffee. Not sure what to think of this one…very weird combination, but it does work in some aspects. In the end, I do prefer these flavors to be separate…the hop qualities would be better fitted for a DIPA and the imp. stout qualities would make an excellent stout. Nevertheless, an interesting brew to try if you are adventurous!

    Good afternoon!

I am enjoying Guava Grove by Cigar City- had a small sample of this in 2011 but I've had a bottle cellaring since 2011 that I had a chance to sit down and write a review and get to know this beer a little better!

    A. Body is a dark, hazy, non-uniform, translucent dark golden hue. Pours with a 3-4 finger foamy white head that eventually fades to a thick collar; some lacing is left behind in the glass.

S- Nose is rather tart-with sour guava being the highlight-quite acidic in nature. Behind this is a lot of bready yeast, sweetness, and a bit of barnyard funk. When chilled- there is a lot of alcohol astringency in the nose- but as the beer warms I am not getting that as much.

T- Flavor is very typical of a saison upfront. A lot of barnyard funk and a little bit of a bready sweet backbone. There are overtones of clove in the initial flavor. The tartness comes in a little for the finish-but the finish is a lot more funky than sour-but some sour does come through. Left to linger is a bit of tartness, a bit of funk, but surprisingly the main thing that lingers is a bready and sugary sweetness.

M- Moderate but small and bubbly carbonation that fades quickly. Body is light to medium in weight and acidic in consistency.

O- Overall this is a good beer. Definitely in the funky/wild subfamily of saisons. It actually tastes like it might have some brett in it (even though it does not). It is quite tart in nature . I like it-but it doesn't have that smoothness or balance that I am looking for. Its not hoppy at all- but I don't think that it was before aging either. It has cellared well.

and while that is an outstanding beer, you should try the rum barrel version, or the "better" ones.

Wonderful IPA. Hoppy, but not too bitter. Malty, but not too sweet. Great balance. The perfect complement to my tri-tip sandwich at Mission St. BBQ. Would definitely have it again!

Greetings NBSer's New and Esteemed (I didn't want to say "old")

Strong sun, coupled with a tad of humidity, makes me want to stay in the shade today. But, at least we're getting some clouds to drape the sky, and hint at autumn here in SoCal.

I went with a new offering from the Bruery, Roble Blanco, a wheat wine aged in Tequila barrels, presumably to pay homage (in a zymurgical format) to the margarita. Did the Bruery nail it? Well as the say in Mexico, "pues, manana."
Kinda like a, "maybe next time."

I tried it, I survived <waving hand in front of face, checking for vision loss>, but I probably won't go down that calle again.

    Salud a todos

Greetings NBS! After a rainy week, it was a pleasant weekend, with a beautiful day yesterday and a cooler, but still mostly sunny Sunday. Had to help some family with a move yesterday, but it was an enjoyable day and I surely got in some solid beer after the move

Today's new beer is Founders Dark Penance. Not surprisingly this is a real tasty Black IPA, with solid bitterness and complex citrus flavors coming through. If I drank this without looking at it, you could probably convince me it was an IPA or even a Red IPA, as I don't get a ton of coffee or roast. Overall, a good one and worth a try!

I have enjoyed all of the Clown Shoes stouts that I have tried so far, so when I stumbled on a bottle of Blaecorn Unidragon a few weeks ago, I had to grab it especially since they were kind enough to age it for me (bottled 9/25/2012).

This one certainly did not disappoint. Big bold roasted malts, rich dark chocolate, and hints of smokey charred oak. Everything I like in a Russian Imperial Stout. Very well done. I need to track down a couple more bottles sometime.

    New TIPA Sunday!

#ProperGlassware, too. That's one benefit of having our yard sale last week- I had to dig through boxes in the garage that I haven't opened in years and years, and go 'that's where I put that thing'. This dimpled mug found its way back in the fold, so what a perfect beer to fill it with.

Believe it or not, this is my first time with this one, and I don't know what took me so long! Dayum, I could tell just by the amazing smell at arms length as I was pouring it that I would love this beer. It's got a fantastic blend of tropical fruits (pineapple, mango, passionfruit, papaya) and lots of pine. The palate is moderately full, and the flavors become more bready and earthy as it goes, finishing with a good dose of lingering resiny bitterness. The alcohol does make itself apparent after a few ounces, so I'll regard that as a minor flaw, but I'm a sucker for lots of pine and fruit so a solid A- (4.25) from me.

I'm still in an XTC groove since last night-
