I dont think most saisons are really worth aging. If it has brett or bugs in it, it would age wonderfully. They wont necessarily go bad like an ipa, but I wouldnt really age one.

Definitely depends on the saison. Lower abv, without souring agent, should be drank fresh before the malts oxidize. This is the case with Opal, so don't sit on it. Higher abv saisons and those with bugs will stand up to some age much better, and those with bugs will often even get better.

Saisons are an incredibly broad style, mainly because the origination was from the farmhouses in France/Germany/Belgium brewing some beer during the cooler months, and it generally was just whatever was on hand or the people brewing it happened to like. If you know there's some brett in there or its supposed to be funky, aging it can be fine (though I usually don't go out of the way to age that kind of saison, but i'm not upset if it happens). Other saisons just aren't going to add anything from the aging process and may deteriorate a bit.

I've never had Opal so I don't have direct experience, but based on the FW website (which says to consume with 120 days), the description of the beer, and what others have said, I'd say drinking it earlier rather than later is better, but I wouldn't say you need to drink it tomorrow (unless you want to...). Sometime in the next month or two would probably be the best thing to do.

So, been absent for a few days - who knew attending and pouring at the Brewers Guild beerfest after a week of Detroit Beer Week would be so exhausting! :sunglasses:

So, enough of the hints - since I believe my target is on to me anyway. Started packing tonight - going to be two boxes. Astounded by how many beers I've set aside for this round:grimacing: Going to hit some wants - alot of locals including a couple GABF winners (including one from this year) - a proverbial truck load of beer.

Prepare your porch - boxes hitting the air sometime this week:stuck_out_tongue:

Target... Your 3 boxes are packed. 40 lbs of beer and swag. You successfully completed my "I want you to want my beer" challenge....I also shed a tear as I packed my last bottle of the first batch of a certain saison... But I know you will love it... Didn't count the oz....but should be at least 350 or so.... Hit a shit ton of wants. Prepare your porch. You will certainly have a happy Halloween this year.

I am so excited about this, I just hope that the box I'm sending out lives up to what I'm getting (I know it's not a competition, but I'd like to think I have a good chance of 'winning'). I really can't tell you how much this is going to feel like Christmas morning, a lot of those wants were added once the BIF started and I was thinking about where my sender might be from, but any recently added were by no means just "sure, I'd drink that".

Speaking of my box, and yes, that's singular, it's all packed up including swag and a treat (actually a couple treats) ... suffice to say the weight on the shipping label is not exactly accurate. I'm not kidding when I say be careful lifting it, this is not shit-talking or preening, literally be careful. My numbers on the box's contents are on my work computer, so I'll post that tomorrow.

True... you did listen to one of my early posts saying, target update your freaking CO wants (or else your just gonna get a bunch of great CO beer, that you don't "want")... but not everything in the box is from CO, there are a few other cool brews in there too... (but the best beers in there are from CO, IMO)...

Oh that's right, I knew there was a reason I went looking for CO beers, other than because I had already gone through a bunch of other notable "beer towns" to "want" everything from the city

Shipping out today. I had to get a little help lifting the boxes into my truck.

Have you or @Poorpatz narrowed to my sender which sounds like a win-win situation to me.

I am hoping to get a box packed up for my target today/tomorrow and will go out to a fan of team that hasn't had much to cheer for over the last 4 seasons.

Having gotten a box from both @Clarkson and @Poorpatz, this is very very much a win-win.

Box #1 dropped at FedEx. This box contains most of the beer.

Box #2 with swag, treats and remainder of beer to be packed up tonight.

More bombs headed to the Lone Star state.

For the safety of the box contents, I wish I could've done this, but it's prohibitively expensive to send two packages to AK (unlike within in the lower 48, where it's about the same to send two 20# boxes as one 40# box)

I just couldn't fit all the beer in the box I'd set aside... I wanted to send all the beer and then USPS the swag.

Today's package was a 16X12X12. It's stuffed, and heavy. I'm glad its a wicked strong. double layer Home Depot moving box.

So I said I'd post box stats, so here they are:

413oz across 28 bottles (well, 27+1 can). Weighs in at about 50 pounds (though don't tell FedEx)

    rAvg: 3.955
    Score average: 88.2

    volume weighted rAvg: 3.960
    volume weighted Score average: 88.5

Best bottles to get 144oz rAvg: 4.220
Best bottles to get 144oz Score average: 93.875

Best Local bottles to get 144oz rAvg: 4.074
Best Local bottles to get 144oz Score average: 90.5

    5 Wants.

26 GABF Medals won by 9 of the beers, including 11 Gold, 7 Silver, and 8 Bronze; 3 of them won this year.

Yeah I had to find an 18x18x16 box, I tried an 18x16x16 (which I could've replaced with a double-walled from Home Depot) and it didn't fit. As it is the 18x18x16 box really is more like 20x19x17 with all the bulging.
