I'm looking at buying about 6 pounds of leaf hops here in the next month or so. I've never bought these by the pound and wonder how much freezer space this will be taking up. What's a pound take up?
Are you planning on keeping them in the original bags? Vac sealing them? Where are you buying from? The silver mylar bags from hops direct are large. I'd say atleast 11x11 for 1# of leaf. You could squish them up, I have them in the door of a stand up. The 1 pound packs of hops from fresh hops is vac sealed down a bit, those will be around half the size roughly.. 7 by 6 or 7 by 8 maybe at the most. I think you could fit them all easily in a slide out drawer of a normal bottom freezer in a fridge, or perhaps a side by side, it would be a tight fit on a shelf, but probably doable. If you seal them down flat with a foodsaver, and portion them off, you could probably cut that size down in half.
I just measured a .5lb vacuum sealed bag from Yakima Valley, it's 6.5 x 6.5 x 3. I would like to add that the other bags I have all are sorts of shapes, however. Otherwise the best example I can give is that my 4 lbs of leaf, in roughly 8 bags, takes up about 3/4 of the freezer compartment in a standard upright fridge/freezer...not including the space available in the door.
Thanks for the tips guys. I'd be keeping them in the original bags until I open them and I'd vac seal them with a Food Saver afterwards. I thought that when they do the mylar bags, they flush them with nitro and then vac seal them. Not true of hop leafs, or do they have different process?
the 1 pound bag of leaf hops from Hop Union I have purchased are basically a much bigger version of the 1 ounce packet. 16 times as large. they are mylar and vac sealed. and I assume nitrogen flushed as well. I think 11"x11" is about right if I remember correctly. maybe 2" wide. Cheers.
