I NEVER thought I would cast my lot with the "it tastes different this year" crowd, but based on the two draft pints I've had so far, I think the OP may be on to something. The nose is definitely subdued as compared to the 2009, 2010 and 2011 versions, and we can all agree that aroma influences taste.

Remember that Troeg's is brewing NN in a new location this year, so a bit of variation would not be all that surprising.

I'm not tasting a big difference. If anything its probably me and my changing taste buds.

It's all bad, all of it... Nobody buy anymore NN

Then I can have it all!

I can drink this all day long or at least till I pass out.

I hope they get it figured out, because I won't be buying it again based on how my case tasted. And then there's the bottle I opened last night that was 100% flat. I never had it before btw.

Thought it was great last year, think it's great this year, and will definitely be looking to buy more in the future... (Maybe tastes a little different, but still a great beer)

I remember buying a bomber last year, and damn was it ever hoppy to me! But I had one two last Saturday and I felt it was not as hoppy for me.

I agree with what cbeer88 says about your palate changing and the fact that when you drink on a regular basis you just get used to it. Since my last years Nugget, I probably have had close to 35 beers tops for the whole year. So even though I have enjoyed hoppy beers including Celebration which I love and Arrogant Bastard, I feel that Nugget was a little bit different.

I picked up a case last weekend and have had a few this week. To me, there's no noticeable difference to last year's batch. It's still darn delicious. Might have to grab a second case to have on hand.

Its still delicious this year, and I can't detect any discernible difference in quality or taste.

I don't think anyone here has said that this year's batch sucks, just that there is (to some of us) some noticeable variation as compared to previous experiences. Again, why would that be surprising when a beer is brewed in a new facility for the first time? And I am usually the first to deride those yearly Celebration threads. I get that palates shift.

But no one, including me, is saying that it's bad. There is a tendency on the forums to assume an all-or-nothing, black or white stance on beers but there are many, many shades of gray in between. It's just a little different; still top-notch, but different. I'll be eagerly anticipating the shipments of later batches to compare.

Update: I just cracked a bottle from the 2/22 batch and it is flat out AWESOME. My previous comments were about draft pints I had a two different bars yesterday, and they were WAY different. The bottle has significantly more in the nose than either of the beers I had at the bars. THIS is more like the NN I remember. Perhaps the kegs were from different batches?

I just cracked a 2/22 batch too, and it's unbelievably delicious, I'm going to pick up a case of this stuff. Anyone know how good this stuff is 1-3 months from bottling date?

Jeff O'Neil posted here when people, myself included, wondered if Ithaca had switched up the recipe for
Flower Power. He said all the batch variation was due to the difference in a different year's hop harvest, and that is undoubtedly what is at work here as well.

Have finished my first two sixers of this years NN and the nose is a bit more subdued, but the taste is the same good old NN, easy drinking hop masterpiece it always is, blessedly so. Thanks Troegs, my only three words of advice for you are

    Keep 'em coming!!!

Well, there's about a half dozen threads going on in various BA forums concerning Nugget Nectar and in at least one of them I read someone call it a "drain pour"....

It's not surprising that it tastes different, given what the urumascao beetle did to the cinnamon crop this year.
