Usually buy Sculpin in the cans, and occasionally a batch doesn't quite have the fresh n fruity punch I like so much but most do. I notice more variation in the bomber bottles. Every time I hate the price, $14.99 for the six pack of cans is the very cheapest around here and I have seen it higher. Not much problem with getting fresh, it is always sold out and rarely is it even a month past canning date.

This could honestly just be a case of your palate changing over time. What you thought was "bursting" with tropical flavors might have been back then, but compared to the newer hop varieties it really isn't. I still think Sculpin is amazing. It's definitely a more subdued tropical fruit IPA that's balanced incredibly well by a nice malt backbone.

Its not that overpriced in the keg. I think you end up saving like 60% per oz.

Sculpin was an amazing beer a few years back (and still is). But since then I have had Double Sunshine, Sip of Sunshine, Julius, Mastermind, and Susan. Relatively speaking it doesn't stand out as much. But I still buy kegs of it.

Always has been the best when I could find it on tap. Bought a six of cans this past weekend that were canned 10/7, figured that was about as fresh as its gunna get here in MA.

I'm pretty sure Ballast Point has officially stated they changed the recipe from the initial batches in 2008, but I just did a Google search and couldn't find anything from that time period to back this up. So... ?

I can't speak to what happened to you, OP. I can agree with a few posters above, in that Sculpin is delicious - world class IPA, really - when fresh, but happens to be an IPA that drops off fairly quickly. The brightest candles burn quickest, and all that crap.

Maybe your palate was off? Or it was just (somehow) a bad six pack? I've had fresh Sculpin this Fall (somehow, in CT), and it was quite wonderful.

Had it on tap on Saturday, just reinforced the eh with this beer, really average, I want to like it more but it's just an ok ipa irregardless of the price which is way too high. So it sits , guys buy it old, decides it sucks, so it sits some more , cycle repeats. $16 a six no thanks, even at half price I'd pass.

I actually purchased it for that at Wegmans this past weekend. It was less than 3 weeks old and I'd never had it before (since I have never seen it very fresh).

Good IPA, but not worth that price.

Really? Whenever I saw it at Wegmans it was 13 or 14 bucks.

Maybe they jacked up the price knowing I was from Cashburn, Virginia.

But yeah, that's what it was.

It's always a different price wherever I go. Albertson's it's $18, most liquor stores it's $15, BevMo it's $13 (bottles) and $14 (cans). Kinda dumb they charge another dollar for the cans.

I have a problem paying $13.99 for a 4-month old IPA. Although when I can get it in cans under 2 Months old, I jump at the chance. Just don't get to do it often

I don't get the same citrus fruit that I used to...and I've had it at the brewery. Either the beer has changed, or my tast buds have.

Still very solid, but I pass over it these days. Too many other great options in CA.

For whatever reason, whenever i hear the phrase "west coast IPA", Sculpin is the first one to come to mind. It's great when fresh (and preferably canned).

It recently dropped from $19.99 to $18.99 in Pittsburgh. We're all pretty psyched.

From what I had on tap on Sat I got no fruity hit at all, no tropical fruit, nothing special on the nose, kinda dank to be honest. If you like dank IPAs Torpedo is about equal and much less expensive.
