I would think it fair to have at least one Citizen Kane per style! You can't seriously tell me there's not an IPA that you consider head and shoulders above the others - or a couple of them even, though I don't have a single IPA rated as a 5. It's an interesting discussion. I've got 8 5's - and a lot of almosts.

There's a lot to be said about hype and what you feel in the moment as well. If I'm drinking a beer and I sit there and say to myself, "I don't know how this could get better?" Basically a 5 for me. Although I have altered my score because I knew that it would only be a 5 to me.

I don't give perfect scores for anything that I rate; beer, books, movies, etc. If perfection proves to be anything more than an idea, it certainly won't be applied to anything man-made.

Who says that 5 means perfection? It is the highest score we can give. That is significantly different than meaning perfection.

Exactly- it's just like a 4-star movie review, only 1 better. It should be reserved for the cream of the crop, for sure, but it exists.

Perhaps as stated earlier 'beer nirvana' is unattainable, thus maybe it would be a 6 on the scale. But since it is a 1-5 scale, 6 is impossible, thus perfection is impossible.

Whoa, making my head hurt, someone get me a beer!

    0. 2 closest are fresh Sculpin. Won't get a 5 because I can't drink more then 2 witrout the grapefruit destroying my taste buds. And Double Wide because it's not as great as Sculpin.

Zero. I've had some beers/places which have come close over the years, but with over 2,700 beers rated/reviewed and almost 600 places, I have yet to find a perfect 5.

This is how I feel as well. I never trust a movie critic who has never given a 10 score. It's like you might as well remove the last number because it's effing pointless. But then there wouldn't be any 9's.

I appreciate the rating! Glad to see someone else not afraid to give a '5'!

Only one a while back. I am not sure I would ever give out a perfect 5 again.

I've given 2 perfect scores, with a couple close to it. My 2 were Abt 12 (yes, better than Westy 12) and BCBS. I think they represent their styles dead on!

None. How could you give a perfect five across the board? Beers are constantly evolving. Plus, I am sure nobody here has had every beer...

If you give a perfect five, how can you give a higher score to a beer you think is better?

So there's no such thing as a perfect beer? There's always room for improvement?

If you think of it you can really only have one perfect beer. How can another beer be "more perfect"? Food for thought. I have 1 five. That's for double sunshine
