OP here. I had no idea the can of worms this thread would open! Illegal selling of bootlegged bottles at jacked up prices is BS in my opinion. I tend to favor reliable bottle shops who do things the right way with good prices, customer service ect.... Hi Time is my go to (I live in Costa Mesa). However, there will always be people willing to pay for the un distributed rare release beer.

I am curious if Moe's new avatar is in response to this thread. If so, a very classy move indeed.

    From Yelp
"So, my brother-in-law called to see if this place had the seasonal Bear Republic Racer X in stock and idk which **** he spoke to, but he told us that they in fact did! So the 3 of us hop into my sister's car and journey to El Montey from fucking Irvine only to be told they don't have it. Then the fucking jerk dude had the audacity to say, "you must have called the wrong number." Yeah, okay fuckhead. Just be polite and admit you fucked up and apologize. Rude. My Columbus Day is ruined cause this joint!"

@Earlycsquid does this bring back memories?

You probably don't need it anymore, but if you do I think Total Wine in Lake Forest has a case left and they're super close to Irvine.

I can speak from my experience. A few years back I went to this place, this was way before the lame branding t shirts. Found them out through social media sites. Decided to go and found the place first to be a bit odd, but did find they had a good selection of legal distributed beers. Once i went to the register to purchase I realized behind the counter a variety of non distributed beers such as cascade (before distribution), southern tier, bells, founders, and reserve society beer (way before hoarders). They ended up offering me a few bottles of some of these breweries and I admit I purchased some. They even offered me a cantillon but at a steep price so we turned it down. I haven't been to the shop since not sure how it has changed. At the time thought they were rad guys and even said this is definitely the place to go.

Then I started seeing them at the Bruery especially during special bottle and remember Moe posting that he'll buy your bottle and also texting people constantly to get more of his peeps to stand in line so they can take more home. This started to make me realize how unfair their strategy was for the general consumer. These are the people that ruin it for a regular beer drinker to get a hold of a beer that should really not be that rare but becomes rare and sells out fast because they use it for trade. Then I remember them buying massive bottles of Bruery beer to make it into hoarders, and how they would kiss ass in front of the Bruery staff. They would share their rare beer to them but yet behind the scenes they were selling off their RS beers for a hefty price. They can deny this all they want but I was offered some RS exclusives on my visit. To me this is what drew the line of their antics. When you say you are supporting local businesses but then go behind their back and selling their beer under the table for more money. Buying massive quantities at special events to use for trade bait. They act like these craft beers gods. Those cantillon bottles they sell are from trades and not distributed to them. And if they are legally distributed why the high price. 750ml gueuze shouldn't pass the 19.99 price mark, but sold for 34.99. I have found other stores selling that gueuze for 14.99 for a 750ml. So no reason for the crazy mark up, btw CBK you guys go against everything that Jean Van Roy stands for.

This is the area I don't agree with them, they are fakes and think themselves as robin hoods. You say you share the beer amongst beer drinkers. Yes you do your beer drinking friends. You cause it for regular curious beer drinkers to have to go out of their way to find small batch beer. They create the ugly in the business, but they have also made me realize how stupid it is to chase beer. Like someone said before they are also business people and have business intentions aside from being craft beer advocates.

Were they nice guys? Sure can't say they weren't, but also very unethical. Did they exploit loopholes of course but an honest retailer doesn't look for loopholes they look to run a clean business. They can defend themselves as much as they want, but they know what they are. Sadly they are a local business I can't support. Knowing they are willing to bank of out other people's products illegally is too much.

You wouldn't like for another liquor store to use your name, your pictures, your logo as marketing for their store right? Same concept you sell beer or at least sold beer (you may have changed) that wasn't legal to sell behind these hard working companies for your benefit and profit. Moe and craft beer kings represents what this scene is not.

Pretty sure you mean 350ml should sell for $15-$20
