Was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice about how to ship fragile stemmed glasses like Tekus? I appreciate any input.

I find most Tekus are not as fragile as they appear. I've shipped a few and had a few shipped to me with no problems whatsoever. My recomendation is to pack the cup portion with newspaper, wrap the whole glass in more newspaper and then bubble wrap the living hell out of it. If you're shipping to by itself you shouldn't have any problems. If you're shipping it with additional items either place it in a seperate small box or ensure it's at the top of the box and won't move around. Also be sure to write "this end up" on the box. Hope this helps.

Here's what I've done in the past:
    • Wrap the glass in paper, making sure to fold it around all the edges of the rim and base. Then lots of bubble wrap around that.
    • Using a flat piece of cardboard taller than the glass, fold it 4 ways around the padded glass to construct a form-fitting box that snugly holds it (using a box cutter to lightly score the cardboard makes it easier to fold)
    • Place the box inside a larger box with plenty of padding (bubble wrap, styrofoam, peanuts, newspaper, etc.
Should be pretty bombproof after that.

Stuff the glass. Newspaper, shipping peanuts, something to provide a little internal support.

Buy a 4" in diameter double-ply kraft tube. Cut it to size on a rotary saw. Stuff glass, bubble wrap glass, place glass in tube, cap ends, place tube in carton/box, insert bubble wrap/newspaper. Boom.

That sounds pretty hardcore, but definitely would be bombproof.

So say I'm shipping 2 Tekus, no beer in the box, just the glasses. What size box would you use? As small as I can possibly fit them in, or slightly bigger and stuff with peanuts/etc.?

All great tips. I'd add that, while you may not have control of how a box is handled, I'd at least put them in the box vertically (perpendicular to where you are going to put the label). It's the downward impact when the box is dropped/handled that will cause the stem to snap.

Use a box with ample room. If you think that compressing the box will put too much pressures on the glasses inside, the box is too small. Jester King sent me a box like that, too snug, and glasses were aligned horizontally. 1 of the 3 stems snapped off. Prairie does a great job with a nice size box and pack the glasses vertically.

    I agree with @mythaeus

I was going to cite Prairie as my example as well. I have ordered a bunch of glassware from them and they have always arrived perfectly packed and always intact.

If I were ever to ship glasses, I would use their box, packing materials, and process as my standard.

Lot's of great tips in the thread. I had great luck shipping a FFF teku doing this. Use a box with ample room. I filled the glass with shredded paper. Wrapped it with a couple of layers of bubble wrap. Then I filled a grocery bag with more shredded paper, placed the glass in the bag, made sure to cover that with more of the shreds and tied it off. Boxed it and the placed that in a slightly larger box, filling the gaps with wads of newspaper. Arrived safely. Oh, yeah ... I did lay the glass in the box horizontally. However you decide to pack, I wish you success!

Hahaha...with the way you pack, you can lay it whatever way and it won't matter one bit!

I knew it!!!! I was wondering how long it was gonna take for you to reply to that!!!:grinning: I was laughing so hard, I had to wait to reply! :grinning:
What can I say? FFF won't even ship them when they have them in, "due to their fragile nature". If they won't ship ... Well, lets just say it got me thinking.

The tube method works. I brought a bunch of glasses, tekus, goblets and skinny tulips back from the UK on a recent visit. I stuffed them all in artist/poster tubes with bubble wrap and they survived 2 flights plus rolling around the baggage carousel.
