It might be more economical in the long run for both the brewer and consumer, but probably not. Besides, I think a lot of canned beer tastes like $**T !!

I have purchased many canned 6 packs in the last two years and gotten horrible beer- underfilled, flat, oxidized, once had a 6 pack from a large regional brewery that tasted like liquid metal. Have not had these issues in bottles. Maybe it is coincidence, maybe it is "rookie" canning operations, but I have never had beer out of bottles that had such nasty, obvious issues.

They're starting with Summer Love and I wanna say Prima and Headwaters are coming after. Don't quote me though.

    More aesthetically pleasing? Interesting fetish.

My beer barely stays in the vessel long enough for me to enjoy it. Go cans for all reasons stated.

Seeing that cans have been around for at least 50 years and haven't replaced bottles yet, no, I don't think 12 oz. bottles will ever be obsolete. And if 12 oz. bottles ever do become obsolete, they'll have a comeback, just like milk bottles.

Not if the glass industry has anything to say about it. If everyone started canning, a huge increase in aluminum can demand could also cause issues and probably higher prices.

I find it amusing that people tore into the OP when he posted a thread about how lame it is that some breweries (3 Floyds) had crooked /pealing labels - the comments were all about "it's what in the bottle that counts - duh" - but NOW the best argument people can come up with in favor of keeping bottles is that they're more aesthically pleasing and classic. A nice contradiction there.

In a perfect world - high quality bottling line versus high quality canning line - there doesn't seem to be any advantage to bottles. The only reason they won't go away (at least for a very long time) is economics - people aren't just going to throw away perfectling good bottling lines - and tradition / bias among consumers. There will always be folks out there than have some ill-formed preconceived notion that a bottle is automatically better (e.g. BPA and liners of bottles leaching nasty stuff into the beverage, the mystical beverage aging properties of glass, etc).

I was at whole foods yesterday picking up some brews, when I overheard a young couple getting excited about this really good beer they were buying. It was a 6 pack of Sculpin. Ok, cool they are discovering good beer, that is good!!! Then the girl shouted "oh hey honey, they have it in bottles!!!" They grabbed their canned 6pack, put it back in the fridge and grabbed the bottled version. She followed up with a "Why would they put it in cans? I haven't drinken beer from a can in years. I guess some people still like it in cans? hahaha." The bf agreed and they went happily off.

It's not the first time I've heard people talking negatively about the canned format. It might even be possible that us beer nerds that prefer the canned format might not be the majority! I think that's the main reason why it's tough to switch over to canned, and why companies like Ballast choose to do both bottles and cans at the same time.

TLDR - There are people who BUY craft beers, who still believe bottles > cans.

Worst thread ever created… Go into your bathroom, look into the mirror, and say out loud "Will 12oz bottles soon be obsolete?" Come back and delete the thread when you realize the idiocy I've already recognized.

I am big into collecting and displaying bottles in a sort of "bottle graveyard." Bottles just serve this purpose better for me than cans. It's cool to have Heady on my shelf, but as awesome as the art on it is, it looks a little silly next to such great bottles as Beyond Good and Evil and Duck, Duck, Gooze.

I have kept all of my records from about '65 and people want them badly. I play them rarely, but the quality sound is excellent.

Didn't you realize that it's either one or the other? Glass/clay overtook pig bladders and the world's a better place!

No, because every, no most, companies wants to take up as much shelf and cooler space as possible.

No. But I wish brewers would put high ABV beers in nips (7 oz) more often.

12 oz is a little too much for one serving of a 10-11% ABV brew sometimes. And if you want more? Just drink two.
