My grandfather never left Ireland so I'm not sure, but considering he was from Cobh which is near Cork, I'd guess it was Murphy's. Or Guinness. And probably a lot of Paddy's Irish Whiskey.

One was very much against alcohol. From what I've heard about my other one, he drank moonshine he made out in the woods until he met my grandma.

Can't remember what either grandfather drank, but I distinctly remember my grandmother drinking a hefty amount of Lucky's Lager when I was a child. The bottle caps used to have these little picture word games on them and she would give them to me to figure out. She would drink a lot of them so I always had plenty of entertainment trying to guess those things. Very good memory, thanks for starting this thread I had not thought about that in a while.

Both of my grandfathers died before I was born but given they were born in the 1800's, and where they lived, they might have had pre-Prohibition Narragansett (Dad's side) and Yeungling (Mom's side). But for all I know they both drank Ruppert Knickerbocker because I have an old Knickerbocker bottle opener that made its way down to me. My dad drank Schaefer so perhaps his Dad did too.

The cheapest shit he could find, it was usually Old Milwaukee, Schlitz, or Beast best of my recollection. He still drinks, but only cheap Canadian whiskey now. I recently bought him a bottle of lower end Canadian for his birthday and he acted like it was outrageous that I would spend $25 on fifth. If that tell's you anything. I personally find a $25 bottle fairly entry level and day to day drinking whiskey. Depression era vs. Gen X, I guess?

My Mom's dad drank Budweiser and Schlitz. Originally, he drank Bourbon, but settled on beer at the end. I remember being about 10 years old (1961) when picked up my grandparents (from Birmingham, Alabama) at the train station at about 1 AM. When we got back to the house, the big Mark Twain looking jokester opened the fridge and said, "Mary Louise, you're looking a bit long on milk and short on beer". I'll bet my dad's dad (from Richmond) never drank a beer in his life. My mom's dad lived to be 88 and my dad's dad to 93.

Black Label. Never ventured to take a whiff, but was very curious about the moonshine he kept in mason jars underneath the bar.

Out of both of my grandfathers, only one of them drank. He drank and made grappa. I did however get a chance to swig some. Before he passed, on several occasions he would sneak me a few sips when I was a young lad. If only I could try it now, as a grown up, with my taste buds!

My maternal grand father passed away when I was around 4, but my mom has pictures of me hanging out with him at his favorite tavern in Louisville, no doubt drinking Falls City. She says I would tell them "I'm going down to the drinking store with Grandpa", and it looks like we were having a lot of fun - my how times have changed.

Second time this has happened to me. Must be getting senile, but this posted to a different topic. It looked pretty silly there so I will repost.

My grandfather on my mother's side was a pretty hard drinking navy guy. He married a methodist that did not allow alcohol in the house. So my grandfather could not hide beer so a small bottle of whiskey was hidden behind the furnace. That was the best tended furnace in the whole state.

One of my grandfather's was a Scotch guy (Old Smugglers until he discovered single malt at age 80)
the other rarely drank, but when he did, I think he was a gin or vodka guy.
My dad drank Brador, then Red Dog until I introduced him to good beer. Now it's Torpedo 95% of the time.

How bout does. He loves his dark beer, especially porters and bocks. He lived in Germany for awhile while in the military and has never been a fan of what he calls "Squirrel Piss" or "domestic". I love visiting him in Arizona, the worst beer he'll have in there is usually Moose Drool and we always try to find a new brewpub or brewery to visit and try.
