Good morning fermentable, but not yet fossilized fathers,

Northern Lower Michigan is cloudy after about 12 hours of healthy rain, (and boy, did we need it). Supposed to clear up by noon and get near 80F. Mattcrill is on a weekend getaway with his beautiful family, so you're unlucky enough to get me

Short's has been killing it with new releases seeming every 3-4 weeks. Their Kolsch 45 *is* my favorite hot weather go-to beer as of now. Their Nicie Spicie saw two six packs of real estate in my garage beer fridge too. The Curl Imperial Pils is killer and still tasting good. The Spruce Pils should be surfacing soon. Arbor Brewings Strawberry Belgian Blonde didn't last long at my local, as it's REALLY good this year. Not a fake, ultra sweet concoction, but rather a beautifully balanced and natural tasting ale. Odd Sides Pineapple IPA is ripping it up too. I'm planning on a trip to HopCat/Founders/Brewery Vivant this coming week, so I'm sure there will be MANY more new delicious brews to savor.

As for today, try a new beer, (yes, atually drink a new beer). AFTER you've done so, tell/show/share us all about it. Please wait until AFTER you've latched in to your new beer, please. Include the link to your formal review, if you'd like. Just follow the people who seem to know what their doing if you're new to this thread. And for all you dads, have an extra new beer today, okay? Good day and good drinkin'.

In the undying spirit of good beer,

    malty

G'day Malty and to the rest of the NBS-ites!

Sunny and warm would be how I describe Casper right now. Gots to get the old lawnmower out.

It's good to see you back at the helm though Matt did more than a splendid job of carrying the colours for this, the most classic of BA threads.

Good day NBS. Going to be a lazy day of watching soccer (never thought the day would come that I would actually be interested in the sport) and cooking some brisket. My beer today was a bit of a disappointment. Fish Brewing Co returns to MN but I hope they bring better beers. Do they brew Old Woody anymore?

    Nostalgia Sunday

Going with beers from Michigan Brewing Company today. Their main brewery recently closed its doors.

While I can't say it was a world class brewery, it had a lot going for it. I discovered it years ago when it was housed in a tiny building behind a gas station. Beers were always decent to really good (imperial stout, Screaming Pumpkin, and Celis brews especially). It was a great way to break up a trip across the state on I-96.

    Here's a beer I'm actually surprised I haven't reviewed.

    More to come...

I had a bottle once and I don't remember where the heck I got it. It was before I started reviewing and trading. Maybe on one of my trips to CO. Anywho, I remember that I liked it. I would have loved to have tried the one brewed out of Austin.

Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout. First Sam Smith ever. After butchering my entry into last weeks thread, please allow me to make amends. I don't review, but here goes....

1 pint 2.7 oz (classic label) bottle poured into Guinness pint glass. Beer is a dark brown, almost black color. Looks very good, wished it was cold or rainy today. Smell is kind of like chocolate, to me. Head dissipated quickly, but still lingers at about a quarter of an inch. Lacing is decent enuff.
Taste--oh yeah. This is what I like about good stouts. Thick, but not too much. Full bodied, with an almost coffee-nish to it. I swear I detect a hint of oatmeal in it!and no overbearing presence of alcohol

Overall--one superb beer that I can't believe I've waited this long to try. Add to my list of go-to winter beers. This is my kind of stout.

It is that damn good, isn't it? The whole Samuel Smith line I think of as comfort beers.

    Santa Fe's Imperial Java Stout.

Going to have to try this fresh next winter because if its this good in June, wonder what it'll taste like with some fresh coffee. A really good stout, maybe even bordering on great? The big thing holding it back is that the roastiness wasn't quite as defined as it could have been. Maybe a case of age? But other than that a wonderful beer with some strong coffee beans, chocolate, and creaminess. I also didn't notice any alcohol from this. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1683/36164/?ba=denver10

    Greetings, NBSers,
It's 76 degrees, partly sunny and breezy in the city gearing up for the weekend when thousands of people play basketball on the downtown steets. Compared to last weekend, when yours truly got rained out of a camping trip and Wednesday, when your humble scribe experienced a "tears of god" style downpour complete with disturbingly close lightning strikes while working in what was essentially a metal box, I'll gladly take today's weather. Yesterday was downright summer-like while I was at the 2nd Annual "Summer's Here" Brewfest in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Sampled the better part of 30 beers, the best of which was an Imperial IPA from Odell, a brewery not normally found around these parts. Also tried Elysian's Apocalypse "Peste", which was, er, interesting (if I drink it again, it will be while sharing it with someone else).

Today's offering comes from Deschutes, a brewery I'm normally rather fond of:

    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/63/68942/?ba=woemad

Blandly refreshing, but all in all I'm rather more in the mood for an unambiguously hoppy beer, so perhaps I'll be back.
