I have had good Mosaic (especially at the brewery) and not as good Mosaic, so I now always ask how long it's been on tap before ordering.

Top 10 DFW brews according to BA (http://www.beeradvocate.com/lists/state/tx/):

    1. Lakewood Bourbon Barrel Temptress 4.22
    2. Mosaic IPA 4.11
    3. (Rahr) Bourbon Barrel Aged Winter Warmer 4.07
    3. Lakewood The Temptress 4.07
    5. Velvet Hammer 4.04
    5. Legion Stout 4.04
    7. Numb Comfort 4.03
    8. Quakertown Stout 4.02
    9. Deep Ellum IPA 4.01
    10. Brunch Money 3.95

The ratings are so close that I suspect a few out-of-whack reviews could take a beer from #10 to the top three.

Prior to 2013, BBAWW was awesome, but last years batch was terrible. Hopefully Rahr went back to their roots this year, that used to be one of my favorite beers

Collective has some really great stuff. Both their staple beers Galaxy, and Mustache Rye are excellent. I've not yet had their sour or saison, but based off the other two, I'm sure they are wonderful. Plus they have a crowler filling machine, how cool is that? With them just opening their brewery, and being able to sell on site, I see only good things for them in the future. Really excited to have them in Fort Worth.

I was there a couple of weeks ago. Their green tea saison was really good. And their petite golden sour was excellent. I'm looking forward to see how they grow.

Thanks for posting this. I haven't even heard of Collective. I'll be swinging by soon to check them out.

2012 really wasn't very great, 2011 was awesome, 2012 went downhill, and 2013 just didn't even try...

...and 2010 was amazing. The beer that introduced me to BBA beers.

Gotta say Peticolas is tops in my books- they consistently produce quality offerings. Only wish they canned/bottled.

Am I the only one surprised to see Community BB Glenstemmons not in the top 10? Perhaps not enough reviews?

Yes; not enough reviews to make it to the BA "Top" lists. You can see the rough formula for the weighted rank that BA uses at the bottom of the list pages.

Untappd only takes into account each user's last rating to calculate the average (specifically to stop someone checking in dozens of times to affect the overall rating).

Put Peticolas and Lakewood at the top of the brewery list and let the rest duke it out.

    My personal preference:
    #1 Peticolas
    #2 Lakewood Brewing
    #3 Four Corners
    #4 Revolver
    #5 Community
    #6 Martin House
    #7 903 Brewing
    #8 Armadillo
    #9 Audacity
    #10 Rahr

I'm a fervent user of Untappd, but this highlights my main issue with it. On a 5 point rating system, everything averages between a 3 and 4. A beer/brewery needs to be universally loved (rare-ish, because different strokes, different folks) or universally hated (not as rare). I find this to be true of RateBeer as well, and I don't trust a system that can rate so many beers as a 95+.

Community's Mosaic is ranked a 95 by the bros and a 93 by BA...I would certainly consider that great.

Ignore your senses- beer totally tastes better if there is a number on the side of a bottle- regardless of the quality. i'd rather drink a 4 week old IPA with off the chart levels of diacetyl, that has a date on it versus a great "tasting" IPA w/ no date not he side. They should date pint glasses too when "great beers" are poured on draught.

I might not put Armadillo so high up on the list but otherwise I completely agree with the original list.

Look, I like Mosaic, I really do. It's the best we have, regularly available. But I won't put it in a box to my trading partners when I don't know how old it is and if they go to the trouble to find me fresh local IPA's in return, no matter how it tastes.

Perhaps I didn't write my original statement the way I was thinking though. I love IPA's, fresh ones at that. I think what DFW is lacking is a decent quantity of local, fresh, regularly available good ol' IPA's. Mosiac is one, and we know everyone's thoughts on Deep Ellum IPA. I just scanned the lineups from out local brewers and I would say that we are lacking in numbers of good ones and I want more.
