Most disappointing whale (my whale not incredibly hard to find but does take effort) was a 2013 Prop....coconut flavor was gone just a damn good BCBS. Love the thread, so many good beers here lots of other people don't "get" or care for.
Not saying I'm easy to please, but most of the beers people nailed on here I liked.
Agree with some though, a lot are built up, like Dark Lord. I go when I can get tickets, but the beer itself doesn't blow me away, just a good party.

Back in the day, (2008ish) Darkness, DL and KtG were of the highest prize. I traded arms, legs and unmentionables...never impressed.

Man that is dissapointing. When did you have it? Just curious because I've had it on tap and on bottles in the last several months and it was surprisingly strong on coconut.

Heady Topper for me. I've had it a couple of times but never super fresh, but recenlty I was able to try a week old can and still I wasn't impressed. It's a nice ipa for sure, but not worth the hype by a lot. I've had ipa's from not only the west coast that were much better, but also all around other parts of the country. I just don't get the hype.

PtE will also fall in this category.

Heh. 95% of beers on untappd have a 3.6 rating, give or take a couple hundredths of a percent, so you're definitely not an outlier.

PTE x 4 for me...the 4th still didn't impress. To each his own I guess.

Heady topper, didn't live up to the hype. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either.

Zombie Dust > PtE > Swami > Heady

also not blown away by BCBW as well.

My most disappointing beer was BCBS Cherry Rye. I tried this earlier in the year and it was disgusting. It tasted like cough syrup, highly disappointing. I do have one more bottle which I will try again, but I was still disappointed because I had such high hopes for this beer.

Had it 3-4 months ago, talked to numerous BA's and others have had the same experience, seems to go bottle to bottle, also was pointed out that the bottle may have needed to be shaken or moved around to get the coconut off the bottom. Originally had a taste at 4Elf party and was impressed.

Hypeslam and KBS were both disappointing imo

BCBS Rare... the search was fun, but the beer let us down. BA DL on the other hand... wow.

The only whale I found to be awful and a total fail was HOTD Matt. It didn't taste infected or anything. It tasted perhaps like the combination of a cigar shop and a biology lab.

There have been a large number of whales that I found to be...meh...definitely not worth the effort to get ahold of.

The Breury Melange #3- another strong ale not brewed to my palate
Anything from Columbus Brewery - their carbonation is soda-like and I can't get past it
Pisgah Vortex II- too fruity for a top notch imperial stout
FW Parabola- all roasted malt and booze
Fat Heads Head Hunter - too aggressive
COAST Boy King - fresh from a growler-I like IPAs that are brighter
Westvleteren VIII - falls well short of XII and VI

I see a lot of KBS, Hopslam, and PtE on the list. While not whales KBS and Hopslam are horribly overrated. PtE is good- but after having many other world class IIPAs- it just doesn't compare.

These type of threads have come up a lot over the years- I find it interesting to see what else didn't live up to other's expectations. Everybody has a different palate-which is why I also like the "What are your favorite" whale-type threads.

What, in your opinion, constitutes a whale?

I wasn't aware that we were in the business of judging people's definitions of a whale, just in the business of judging the quality of beer, in this case, beer that is hard to find, rated highly, and highly overrated.

    Also, you forgot a comma.

Always interesting to see the IPA rankings compared by West Coasters vs East Coasters...I have a hard time believing they aren't affected by freshness, travel, and maybe a little bias.

I was fortunate to be in San Diego last week and try PtE on tap (much better) as well as Swami and others- and in case you actually care:

Heady>Pupil>PtE>ZD...>JustOutstanding....>Swami. So many great IPA/DIPAs out there - you guys are a bit spoiled!
