I'm all for the concept of drink best.

But - let's support our growing local scene a bit, and not be dismissive eh? If you've tried it, then yes it may not have quite the punch of BCBS (but then unless you start going into the high ABV realm of Black Tuesday etc, what does?), but it's a very good BA stout, and it's brewed locally. Let's be happy about that. If I saw regular BCBS and BA BQE both on at a bar, I'd take the BQE.

I agree with what you're saying about supporting local business--the problem for me is that ABC charges sit-in prices for their to go growler fills

How much did they have left when you were there? I have the day off and was considering driving into Astoria to pick up a bottle and a growler of BA BQE. I just called them but no one picked up the phone. Doesn't look like they open until 10.

Yeah agree with you - I was just responding to the comment about BA BQE being "not even remotely close to regular BCBS lets not kid ourselves".

But whether it's there, or somewhere else where you think the pricing is better, i would definitely recommend trying it

You guys have realized that WF isn't getting VR this year right? UPC codes in their database were from 2010 Vanilla so all locations had to send their VR allocations away. This is the second time it happens to them. Bowery in particular. That's how New Beer got their VRs. They went to drop it off at Bowery but the cases (2) weren't on their invoice so they reallocated, rather quickly, to the douchers at NB.

Ugghh NB is one of the shadiest spots for high end releases

I have had it, yes. I'm all for drinking local - have been filling up growlers of Green Diamonds since it was first released last year, but that's neither here nor there. I was just commenting on how much bang you're gonna get for the same amount of bucks. The beers are in different leagues, but yes, drink local rah rah rah I'm with you in spirit (and practice, quite often).

Thanks. I actually just talked to someone on the phone. He says they have 2 bottles left. Considering it is an hour drive for me, and I wouldn't get there till close to 1, I can't justify the drive for two reasons: (1) Spending $15 on gas for a $7 beer and (2) It's highly possible both bottles will be gone by the time I get there.

If anyone is in the area and has time to pick up one of the bottles, I would love to consider a beer or cash trade for a bottle sometime in the near future when I have other reasons to drive into Queens.

I think most of their growler prices are fair. Not as cheap as some (like Triboro) but don't think its close to "sit-in prices". A quick scan of beermenus shows their prices compare favorably to Whole Foods with a few of the growlers they are offering now.

Mango Mosaic is 8/16 at ABC and 7/14 at WF Bowery
The Fear Pumpkin is 10/20 at ABC and 9/18 at WF BK and 11/21 at Deciccos Armonk

It's a small sample but I have limited time to spend. Where do you get your significantly cheaper growler prices in Queens (or elsewhere)?

If bang means ABV (BA BQE = 9.2%, and BCBS = ~14%), then I suppose I agree. But by that logic, why would anyone drink anything but the most imperial of imperial versions of any style? Why bother trying Superfun if you can buy similarly priced DIPAs?

If someone wants an in-your-face high ABV barrel-aged stout, go for BCBS. If someone wants a relatively drinkable, locally brewed barrel-aged stout, how about giving BA BQE a shot.

But I wouldn't dissuade someone from trying a similarly priced local option, just because it lacks the intensity/alcohol. BCBS isn't the be all end all of BA stouts.

When I do get growler fills (which I admit isn't that often) I go to triboro and used to go to American beer in BK. It seems to me the px's for growler fills at ABC have come down recently (I check beer menus daily). I seem to recall something like a stone enjoy by being more expensive to take a growler home ($4$) than just buying a couple bombers.

Kudos to you Jimmy for making me take another look --I think i may stop by tonight for some Gorilla Warfare.

For those still interested: Arts + Crafts Bar still has Vanilla Rye (and regular and coffee and barley wine) on tap as of 1:00 pm today.

The bartender told me that growler fills work out to be around $70 for 32 ounces.

Without question. If you are in the vicinity of ACB, I strongly recommend a trip there, if for nothing more than to try it yourself. Just get a pour and savor it. It's really, really good.

And as much as I like the BCVR, I can't get behind the $70 growler. No chance.
