Planning a trip to st. louis in mid july. What are the best beer stores? Which brewpubs should I be required not to miss...
The Wine and Cheese Place in Clayton has the best overall selection and prices, although you're unlikely to find anything rare there. All the rare stuff they get usually goes online and is gone in minutes, but you could get lucky. Personally, as far as brewpubs, I like Schlafly's Tap Room and Urban Chestnut. Schlafly is the original St. Louis Craft Brewery with good food, good beer and good atmosphere. Urban Chestnut serves more traditional German style brews along with other beers, but nothing really "out there." Food is also limited. If you prefer beers that are pushing the envelope, try Perennial. St. Louis really has had an explosion in craft beer of the last couple of years. There are many other good breweries with tasting rooms. And be sure to take the AB Brewery Tour if you have time. It's worth it. http://stlhops.com/st-louis-beer-guide/
I just visited STL this past weekend and The Wine and Cheese Place in Forsyth has some good stuff. It was recommneded by locals to have the best beer selection of all the TWCP locations. I picked up some Stillwater Cellar Door, Odell Myrcenary, Odell Shenanigans, De Molen Bed & Breakfast, and Nebraska Apricot Au Poivre Saison. if I wasn't broke I could've spent hundreds more on stuff I can't get in Illinois. Definitely regret not picking up any stuff from Evil Twin as well.
The Wine and Cheese Place is great. When I am in STL, Lukas Liquors in Ellisville is a lot more convenient and they have a massive selection and great staff. I checked out Wolfbrau House of Beer in St Peters about a week ago for the first time and it reminded me of the Four Firkins up here in St Louis Park when it first opened.
I don't live in STL, but get there 3 - 4 times a year. As far as brewpubs, I've always favored Schlafly's Tap Room. Their food is good and they always have plenty of interesting things on tap. Lukas Liquors in Ellisville probably has the biggest selection, but it's a bit out of the way for me, so it's been awhile since I've been there. I've always found something worth buying at The Wine & Cheese Place in Clayton, plus if you're into cheeses, olives, sauces, etc. it's worth a stop. Friar Tuck's on Watson Road is decent too if it's close to where you're going. Just be sure to look on the counter by the registers or ask if you want something that is a recent release, they sometimes hold the recent release stuff behind the counter. Another place I haven't been to in a while, but have always found beers I couldn't find in Missouri is Corral Liquors in Granite City, IL. Happy shopping!
Went to Lukas and they had a massive selection, specifically all the local brews (Perennial, 4 Hands, 6 Row, Schlafly, etc.). It was out in the suburbs though. Randalls, which is close to downtown, also had a gigantic selection, and had Goose Island Fluer and Lolita, which I has hunting for.
I have a couple suggestions for you as I live in the st Louis area. Stores: Randall's, Lukas Liquors (touted as missouri's #1 beer store), and friar tucks. All have a good selection Can't miss brew pubs: my absolute favorite is Square One which is located close to downtown and has awesome food. Civil Life and Urban Chestnut are also great as well!!! Hope that helps. Adam
