I hate being a jerk on facebook, but as a fellow Sacramento beer drinker, I feel it is important for them to know how upset beer fans are. Beer Week is supposed to be about showcasing great beer from all over, and offering the beer drinkers of Sacramento a chance to try new things, and give them a great reason to visit establishments they otherwise wouldn't. Just this week, I wen to about 5 new places and had some great beers. I was greeted with great deals, rare beers, and great service. If we don't stand up for this and let them know how we feel, it pretty much gives them the okay to do crap like this again.

I feel bad about the comments I made on their facebook, but I still stand strong in my belief that they knew what they were doing, and they are doing a terrible job with damage control. My friends and I had contemplated going there yesterday, but after hearing about this, we opted for "hell no". That's what I love about social media, it allows us to directly give feedback and make changes that we feel can be made. Our voices are heard, and our opinions do matter.

Cheers everybody, I really hope you all enjoyed beer week and the great deals and beers that the city had to offer.

Pangea got called out on the stupid 70$ price too. They eventually dropped it to an "affordable" 40$ or something like that.

Yep. I bet some would pay that price, but in the long run, it was a dumb move. Remember the store in MN that charged 40$ for Darkness? Apparently, their facebook lit up also, and a large number of people who would frequent the establishment said they are done supporting them. So a few quick bucks today, a big loss of cash tomorrow. Same deal here, especially now that word gets around quick.

if they don't like people letting them know what they think they can delete all the unhappy posts.

I am so glad that all my local establishments (Beer Revolution and the Trappist, mainly) are reasonable. I think I ended up paying about $16 for 64 ounces. I should really make a post giving them both props, they're great establishments.

as much as we may want to throw up a bit in our mouth when we hear about these types of events there is a segment of the craft beer world that is only going to grow more in this direction. it's like the rare and sought after wines where people are paying just as much for the "look what I drank/rarity" factor as they are for the quality of the wine.

at some point you are not just selling beer but also selling the idea of exclusivity and all the psychological aspects of that idea which encourages people to spend $500 on a pair of shoes when the $50 pair is just as good if not better.

I agree with you there. What get's me is the flippers hording upt he CBS, Hopslams, Better Half's, Goose Island specials all for the sake of turning a profit. I bet many waiting in line at 3F don't even know the difference between a Stout and a Porter...

Agreed. The thing is, we don't have to play. Unless the kind of person who needs to be able to say, "well, I've had [insert name of absurdly expensive rare beer here] and let me tell you ... " then there's no reason to pay those prices or wait in those lines. I've visited RR many times, but I've never had the Younger, mainly because I'm not willing to stand in line for five hours--or pay $40-- just to try it when I can easily get PtE, Hopocalypse, Ruination, Sculpin, Green Flash, Maximus, Hoptimum, Double Jack and probably a dozen other excellent DPAs I'm not thinking of right now. I feel like there are more outstanding beers readily available than a person can keep up with. I can't think of any reason to to pay those kinds of prices except, as you say, if you just have to be able to say "look what I drank".

I worked in my Grandfather's hardware store in the '70's...the typical corner store with friendly, personal service. He took great pride in offering outstanding quality & service for a fair price.

One of the best pieces of advice he gave me was, "Son, you can shear a sheep multiple times in a year, but you may only eat it once."

Maybe Kurpos did this for their own entertainment- to see what dumbasses actually paid that price for a burger and pint.

I was surprised to see that Pangaea had bottles of Sucaba for $19.99.

The 1990 Chateau Haut Brion I just had says otherwise! :stuck_out_tongue:

But I see your point, especially living in Napa Valley, bottles of Scarecrow, Colgin, Harlan, Screaming Eagle, etc., starting at $700 per bottle. Hell, I just held a newer vintage magnum of Screaming Eagle in my hand ... $7000. Yeah they're great wines and their prices are justified by great scores, but they're so high in demand and they release so little, the demand for these bottles are astronomical.

The funny part is that that's still slightly overpriced.

I say fuck them, and applaud RR's decision to no longer allow that bar to carry their products. However, given the rarity of Younger I'd probably still show up for the $1 pour. At that price the place is likely barely breaking even on the keg, so I see it as more detriment to them than profit. Once I finished my glass of Younger I'd leave without spending anymore money though.

I love Kupros attempt at damage control though - because the second "offer" of unlimited happy hour is really worth the $31 pint of beer. I sincerely hope this incident isn't over yet because this has provided some really amusing reading today...

Wow, that is beyond fucking silly. I paid around $3 for a taster of Younger at Churchill's.
