I forgot about that part of the story...put that aside and I can understand his argument. Do I agree? No. Do I understand, absolutely. Back on topic, I'm really happy that TG addressed this today:

    Back on topic, sorry.

This really is scary. What if he was better at waxing or bought new wax and instead of some crap beer used a cheap BA stout? Maybe something from Clown Shoes and add a little Maple Syrup? If it was a rare beer like KBBS and someone had never had it before, they might not know they were drinking something else.

What about all the hard to get beers that are only capped with no wax?

I would not be surprised if someone did this with unwaxed beer in the past, it just was not noticed. There are D-bags out there who will find a way to make money by any means necessary. I still cannot believe that someone would buy beer off a website for a few hundred bucks.

The funny thing is, what legal recourse does anyone have? As far as I know, black market beer is illegal. It is kind of like calling the cops because you bought a bag of oregano and thought you were buying pot.

At least we can call him out here.

I'm no legal expert, but I don't think it is illegal, per say. If I were to meet you and hand you a beer and you handed me one in return, we have just completed a transaction. Assuming the products are legal, nothing about the exchange suggests illegality. Selling beer for cash, on the other hand, IS illegal if you do not have the proper licensing with your state (hence why most bottle shops/breweries cannot ship out of state to private consumers). As for shipping, it is against the stated rules of FedEx and UPS but again they cannot determine legality.

That said, this trader did perpetrate a fraud ("deception deliberately practiced in order to secure unfair or unlawful gain"), which IS illegal. I doubt anything will happen beyond the past day's mayhem and the huckster's being shunned from the beer world (at least we can hope).

The good thing is that the greater community of breweries and traders will band together to right the wrong and work to ensure that this doesn't happen again.

^^^This says it better than I did. I was referring to the selling of beer, just did not spell that out.

A gruff old guy sitting at the bar one time when I was geeking out about the choices, hops, etc. graciously offered me this sage advice.

I think his advice has some merit here... and would certainly put beer trade fraud guy and * out of business.

This guy was only able to do this because the bottle caps are unlabeled. If they had logos then he would have to have had access to the originals in order to pull this off. It would be a lot harder to make a forgery if TG didn't use blanks. I realize it's an added expense for a brewery to label its caps and that counterfeiting isn't really a rampant problem (yet; it happens in the wine world so it may only be a matter of time), so it probably doesn't make sense for every brewery, especially small ones. But I'm also biased because I collect bottle caps and always want more!

What a joke. With all the time and energy spent on this crap they could create a tangible and legitimate business.

Who am I kidding, beer fraud is the next big thing. Apple would have been all over it if Steve Jobs was still around.

but he was too f-ing cheap to get enough decoy beer to fill the bottles! All that work and he can't open one more bottle of common stout? Idiot either way but ... idiot.

I wonder if the could press a custom stamp into the wax like they used to do for letters or how it's done on Maker's.

I don't see why not. Reuben's Brews in Seattle does that on their BA RIS releases.
