So I will be going on my honeymoon to Jamaica in January, and would like to bring a couple special beers with me to enjoy with the wife. My plan is to treat it like any domestic flight I have taken beer on. Package well and put it in my checked bag. First of all...

    Has anyone done this before?
How much did you bring with?
Did you declare it when you got to Jamaica? If so, did you have to pay any taxes?

Any help would be much appreciated!!

    Cheers,
    Dave

Last time I went to Jamaica was the '05-'06 timeframe, so it was "post 9/11" in terms of luggage scrutiny. I brought several bottles of wine in my checked luggage. I don't recall anybody asking or checking my luggage entering the country (Jamaica). I made it to the hotel with all of the wine intact, and without issue.

That was enough years ago to where perhaps things have changed, and someone else can speak to a more recent experience and provide more timely guidance.

You probably have a better chance of getting 1lb of dank to Jamaica than beer. If it were me, I wouldn't worry about bringing such items. Enjoy the honeymoon as it is and enjoy the local Pina Coladas and Red Stripe. The local economy will thank you and so will your lawyer.

I'd probably just stick with Red Stripe and doobers. When in Rome...

Damn if I'd hump beer to the islands on a vacation, have some rum, and Red Stripe it won't kill you ya know. Who wants the potential hassle of getting stopped and who knows what, if you ruin your Honeymoon your dead meat to your wife.

We did it last Feb, took Backwoods Bastard, Hopslam, KBS, and a couple others, wrapped in in bubble wrap, then rolled clothes around that and rubber-banded the bundle to keep it together, also wrote a letter to TSA that I had no problem with them opening it all up, but please try to keep it the way it was, did'nt declare it, paid nothing extra, all went smooth. Try to find Dragon Stout Spitfire ( by RedStripe, highest abv beer they make ). Brought some of those back the same way. Good luck, and enjoy your trip!

Went to Jamaica for out 10 yr anniversary back in 07. Packed in cans of Dales Pale Ale and Old Chub. No problems, didn't declare anything .Found where they sold Guinness FES by our resort and didn't look back.. You'll see more Jamaican's drinking FES than you will Red Stripe....

Good luck, Negril and 7 mile beach are great. If you decide to leave the comforts of your all inclusive, there is a lot of great eats up and down 7 mile beach, especially when you get down by the smaller hotels and the market. I had a fantastic meal at this place. Dirt floors, open kitchen, FRESH food.

Yeah. Seems like a risk/reward situation. I'm sure they sell beers other than red stripe somewhere on the island.

@lester619 I hear you, and yeah the wife would probably kill me if I messed up the honeymoon. Just thinking its one of those things where if I get caught they will just throw away the beers and say nice try! haha

Congrats man! We went on our honeymoon last year at the Rockhouse Hotel in Negril, and I must say, it was absolutely amazing. Didn't bring any beer though, but I would highly suggest bringing some, because Red Stripe was literally the only beer we drank there ha.

Just don't buy any weed until you get out of the airport, and into a taxi.. If that's your thing

But yea visit the Appleton Rum Estate since you'll be out that way.

+1 for the Rockhouse, go for dinner one night. Also hit 3 Dives (100 yards down from Rockhouse) for the BEST jerk chicken in Negril (IMO). Finally, hit up Murphy's West End for an amazing dinner, Murphy is the best chef in Negril.
