You know, I've never had Great Divide (anything, IPA's or stouts). I've got to give them a try sometime.

zhukov is a solid stout with no tobacco flavor. very hoppy, and thick as motor oil.

Yes, actually believe it or not Killians' Irish Stout ain't bad. It doesn't finish harsh and is a "dry stout".

That's because Guinness is brewed to be drunk in quantity, it's almost low enough in ABV to be a session beer.I regard this as a plus rather than a criticism.

As already pointed out in other threads, Stout and Porter are two names for the same thing. You might find a beer to your liking labelled as a Porter.

There has been a couple of posts concerning Schwarzbier. Permit me to make a specific recommendation: Shiner Bohemian Black Lager.

    Cheers!

Dude. Yes!! Someone shares my love for this beer. As a Schwarz it is my favorite by far. Schell's Chimney Sweep comes in 2nd but it's a bit too charred to be a traditional Schwarz. Bohemian Black is DA BOMB!!!

This is the great thing about Beer Advocate. Yes, you can look up the favored examples of any particular beer. Myself, I prefer talking to the good folks here on this site and seeing what they have to say. We will not steer you wrong. You are now one of us. Family, if you will. We have different opinions on everything under the Sun, but it's cool. Need to try some Milk/Cream/Oatmeal Stouts and Porters, brother.

Shiner Schwarz is a great beer. Many of their lagers get no love and are under rated.

Gave it an honest go. Drank it cold and then waited for it to warm up some and drank it a little warmer all the way until it was pretty warm from my hand, drank the whole bottle. Didn't hate it but can't see myself buying one again. Im beginning to have a feeling that I'm not a huge fan of stouts in general and just happened to get lucky with Guinness. Sorry to the stout guys out there from what i know saying guinness is a good stout is like saying Long Hammer IPA is a good IPA.

If you like Guinness you like it. There is nothing wrong with that. An Irish Dry Stout is different that an Oatmeal stout. I still like Guinness even though I now prefer SN Stout. Keep drinking your Guinness and try an occasional other style to see if your taste preferences have changed.

Man, enjoy what you will. Never let any one tell you any different. If you think something is the best, then by Gawd, it is. If you think Guinness is a great stout, then it is. If a guy prefers Longhammer IPA over Pliny, then who is to say he's wrong?

Give Sierra Nevada's Rain Check stout a try. It has spices and lime. These will compete with roast on the finish. My review (4.3)

"BOD 5/28/14. Black pour with a fair head and lacing retention. Light nose of roast, chocolate and a hint of ginger and lime. Nice full body with a creamy texture. Normal carbonation level with a touch of effervescence on the finish. Very nice complex and balanced flavor profile. The typical stout flavors of roast and chocolate lead off, then flow into a light burnt sugar/molasses sweetness. As the sweetness fades, ginger comes forward over a light citric tartness and lime flavor. The smooth finish leaves you with a tart chocolate note and a hint of alcohol."

Solemn Oath's Grumpess. A very piney clean stout. It may be your in-between dreamstout. Most imperial and coffee stouts have variations of the bitter aftertaste.

Are there US craft brewed Dry Stouts available to you?

I am not a big fan of the Irish Dry Stout style in general but from time to time I drink Sly Fox O’Reilly’s Irish Stout and Victory Donnybrook Stout. I personally prefer both of these beers over Guinness Dry Stout.

Maybe there are US brewed Dry Stouts available to you that you would enjoy drinking.

    Cheers!

P.S. I more lobby for Shiner Bohemian Black Lager.

I think Barney Flats from Anderson Valley would be an excellent choice. I've always found that beer ridiculously drinkable but remaining true to the stout character. A schwarzbier or a cream stout like Sam Adams would work as well, though I personally find schwarzbiers closer to brown ales that stouts, myself. Or maybe a hybrid like this:

I hope such reccomendations are useful to you, as it's kinda hard for some of us who've come to love RISs to relate (and some of us have clearly not read your post), but I was stalled on Guinness Island for years until I had an Old Rasputin based on an inept reccomendation from a waitress ("We don't have Guinness, but here's something else dark. It's probably the same...") and my mind was blown by my first RIS. I also took to IPAs super quick once I got over the idea I wouldn't like them.
