I had the pleasure of tasting the 2007, 2012 and 2014 vintages of Gouden Carolus Noël (christmas) in a vertical tasting (at Ølbaren, Denmark).

The clear winner was the 2012, but with a bias towards the 2007. I think the sweet spot may be around 3-5 years for this beer. The 2012 was full-bodied, rich, creamy and with less licorice

The 20014 was way too one-dimensional, which is funny as I really like this beer (normally, on its own). The 2007 had lost all its licorice, the 2014 had nothing but it. The 2007 was pretty smooth and port-ish, perhaps with a bit too much oxidation(?).

Good to hear, I've got some 2011 of the regular (blue).

You mean the Cuvee Van De Keizer Blauw/Blue? If so, that's one of my all-time favorite beers, especially at 4-6 years old. But it's no Christmas beer

No, he means the Noel. Completely different beer. Belgian Dark Strong with Xmas spices, much like the other Belgian Xmas beers.

You quoted the OP, who was replying to youradhere.

The second reply in this thread, which you quoted, wasn't referring to the original post, but was replying to the post from user youradhere. The OP made a post about GC Noel, youradhere replied saying that he had some Keizer Blauw, then the OP replied to him saying that youradhere was referring to Keizer Blauw when he said "regular (blue). You quoted the OP in this reply, thinking that he was correcting the OP (presumably not realizing that they were the same person), not correcting youradhere, so I tried to point that out to end any confusion. That was way too convoluted.

But as to the post, I had a bottle of '13 Noel yesterday, and the anise was just starting to subside, but I think I prefer it with a couple years on it.

This beer needs at least 1 year of aging. Fresh it has way too much anise!
