Im over IPA's until Abrasive is released, plus its just that time of year for dark beer. As such, Im looking for some good dark beer available in a 12 pack. Unfortunately, I cant think of much dark beer that comes in a 12er (or possibly cheap 6er, but mostly curious about 12 packs)

What's available in MN in 12 packs thats decent? Schells Dark and Chimney sweep dont really do it for me, Summit porter is ok but also leaves me wanting something a little more...Im looking for Bent Paddle Black ale in a 12 pack really. Is there anything close to that? Im really only asking about Porter's and Stouts, or maybe a malty Brown or very malty Amber ale. I have no interest in Black IPA's (lets face it, although they are dark, they suck in general).

Any ideas? Also, if you post a suggestion, could you include stores that you think have a good selection of 12'ers? Most that I frequent are pretty light on 12 packs.(NW metro specifically, but anywhere for reference I guess)

    Thanks!

I like that Fulton switched Worthy Adversary to 12oz bottles. Comes in a 4 pack this year for $10, almost double the volume from previously for the same price, and 3 of them will make a 12 pack!

Probably not exaclty what you are looking for, but I am excited.

Jubleale comes in a 12 pack. I have a rotation of Black Butte Porter, Indeed Stir Crazy and Summit Winter Ale going on currently and it's doing the trick.

@Chaz I'll try the spaten. they're my favorite Oktoberfest by far.

Also, I got stir crazy and tin whiskers stout on the way home. both very solid. I'm leery of lactose in my stouts but TW does it just right

If your just getting into darks splurge a little and get the 4 pack of Ten Fidy. It's the best stout off the shelf IMO, but it's $14 which is more than you wanted to spend prob.

Not a twelver, but I like having some left hand nitro milk stout in my fridge. Also, Old Rasputin never ever let's me down.

not much comes in twelve packs.

my current rotation includes: founders imperial stout (4packs), founders breakfast stout (4packs), great lakes blackout stout (4packs), sierra nevada narwhal (4packs), bell's expedition stout (6packs), bell's special double cream stout (6packs), central waters satin solitude (6packs), bent paddle cold press (4packs), and clown shoes chocolate sombrero (4packs).

satin solitude is solid for price and being available in 6 packs. you can often find it on sale for $7.99 or $8.49 at places like haskells, byerlys and big top.

Schells Bock should be out in a couple weeks, and it is such a good beer. Does not get enough love. I usually buy two cases a year.

Not a 12er but I just picked up a sixer of Liftbridge Brown Ale....Chestnut Hill I think it is called....anyhow...that is a nice flavorful easy drinking darker beer.... really what I consider a nice session ale..

I think at this point we can all agree that "...aside from Saga" goes without saying.

Lucette Slow Hand Stout. Not a 12 pack, but comes in a six pack of 16oz cans for about $10. They just started canning this one and are working on wider distribution.

@ZAP Ive never had schells bock but will for sure give it a try. same with chestnut brown. I've looked at it a couple times but havent pulled the trigger.

@Chaz where have oyu seen Optimator? I know Ive seen it 1 or 2 places, but im blanking on where. I remember it was somewhere very random. Not many places carry spaten considering how good (i think) they are.

@mingo 's got the solid every day line up of 4 and 6 packs, but Im kinda over $20 bombers and now my inner meiser working its way down to $10+ 4 packs (12 or 16oz). I want the good old days of 08' when craft beer was trendy but not huge. BCBS sat on shelves for months some places. I found KBS weeks after release years ago, Darkness was $20 everywhere! (and why is Le Terroir $15 this year instead of $9-10. Did the manufacturing cost double? or are sours just trendy?)...I know, it will never go back to the way it was, but in light of my unwillingness to pay inflated prices and chase trucks for specialty beers Im just resigned to looking for good, common beer. I know breakfast stout and narwahl are 'common' beer, but Im looking for dark beer I can have 2 of regularly and not rack up a $200+/month beer bill also.

Thanks for the thoughts, keep them coming.

Also, I have to give Tin Whiskers props for a very good stout. I do not like sweet stouts in general and I was leery of TW's stout because it had lactose as an adjunct, but they must ferment most of it out as it is a relatively dry stout and the lactose doesnt overwhelm the mouthfeel (medium with low carb) or sweetness (not very sweet at all). And for a $6 bomber Ill get a couple more before I leave for CT.

just always remember even a $5 bomber = ~$11 four pack, or ~$16 six pack in terms of $ per oz. I always try to keep that in mind as bombers seem like a good value sometimes even when they aren't

Yup - the only time bombers are a good deal is when you compare against other bombers.
