It could be pediococcus which would explain both of those flavors.

Yes, it is a byproduct of fermentation and shows up in many English style ales, but it is also from dirty equipment, dirty draft lines, and unhealthy yeast. Dirty draft lines and faucets are the most common culprits. Pediococcus builds up and forms high levels of diacetyl.

Not saying anything bad about Dayblock. I've only been there once, but the three beers I had were great. I'll definitely be back.

That is always where we go and it might be again....I got three or four growlers from there so I could fill a few while there too.....although now tossing around the new Surly place as an option too...

Freehouse is a nice looking joint that has some good food and good beer. Yes, the names of some of the sandwiches are pretty fucking stupid, oh well. The beer well made and tastes fine. It's just maybe a little too pedestrian for many of us.
Day Block I've been to on three occasions. The beer was a bit rough around the edges, but I went during their first couple of months of operation. I've been meaning to get back but haven't yet.

I've thought Dayblock has consistently gotten better, though the beer still isn't knocking it out of the park. Probably the best thing I've had there was their Mole Porter and the Berliner Weisse with syrups (though that was probably just because they had a number of different syrups to try, I don't remember the Berliner actually being that great otherwise).

The food though is really solid. Haven't had anything there that I didn't really like.

The Weizenbock and Amarillo IPA I had at Dayblock a little over a month ago were both really good.
