So I get back from drinking/trivia night at about 11PM last night, and my wife says "you have a bunch of boxes on the front porch" -- while I knew that 3 boxes from the 12 days of xmas BIF had been delivered, and I suspected I had correctly identified my sender in this round and expected something soon, I did NOT realize that my Winter Sixer BIF haul from @Louis121 had already arrived (and I have no idea how I didn't get a Fedex notification). I did not get to open anything last night, but this is what I get to look forward to tonight...pRon will probably have to wait until tomorrow...

yes, that light switch is at regulation height. I believe the second one from the bottom is my winter sixer, the box on top is also from @Louis121 and is, I assume, swag.

A box containing a bottle of root beer is on a truck in Columbus. Unfortunately I don't think its recipient will be home until tomorrow!

So when I get home I have to unpack everything (and keep the two hauls separate). Then I unwrap everything and inventory it (which involves researching it on BA so I know what it is and to make sure I get the name right). Then I stage pictures. And somewhere in the middle I move all the packing material to someplace where I can use it next.

If I was just gonna take quick pictures and post them I could do that, but that's nowhere near as much fun :-)

I thought I would see what you guys have to say about this. I am going to a friend's for a bottle share. He is new to craft beer and asked me to introduce him to good examples of different beer styles. I plan on bringing some IPA, stout, porter, trippel and sour and have some ideas as to what to bring.
However, I don't want to overwhelm him but would like something that will show a good representation of each style.

Am I forgetting any major styles and what would you bring?

You may want to throw in a pilsner or some other lager. I've found that when I introduce beers with hoppier flavor, it sometimes helps to not start with a blow away IPA.

otherwise, think you're well represented. on the sour side, you may want to start more with a berliner versus a bret bomb.

Or just skip the sour altogether.

    IPA - Bells Two-Hearted
    Porter - Founders Porter
Stout - Bells Expedition / FBS
Trippel - La Fin Du Monde

I would also skip the sour and maybe add something like Victory Prima Pils or Weihenstephaner Hefe

I think these are all fairly affordable and approachable for someone new to craft.

Just make sure to wreck his palate and bring high alcohol beers. Go big or go home!

I don't know about skipping the sour, I've found that, more often than not, people who don't drink craft really enjoy sours because they don't taste overwhelmingly heavy or "beer-y". Especially for people who like fruity drinks or wine.

    True. Maybe Rodenbach?

Really, no sour? Ah well, I was thinking Rodenbach. I think I will still bring it, it is an easy intro to the genre in my opinion. Except for La Fin du Monde, I had the same list as @mklisz . I also like the Weihenstephaner idea. Easily available around here and affordable. This is going to be fun.

I am probably in the minority, but I think an APA/Pale Ale (think something not super hoppy) OR an Amber (not both) aren't bad ideas because they are "transition beers" that may seem more familiar to him. I also think a Black IPA is an awesome idea, because I feel like those are sort of a cross between an IPA and a Stout.

Something of out a barrel might be fun to show what the barrel adds to the style

So, Founders or SNPA. Would Alpha King be too hoppy? I am not sure at this point because I adore a hopped up beer and, to me, it is great but not too hoppy.

I'm not sure, because I'm a hophead too -- I think Alpha King is pretty hoppy though.

This is a good idea. That way he will know if he likes BA beers before he spends money on them.

The Abyss is finally starting to land near me (according to their beer finder) but of course the only local shop showing up right now is one that regularly overcharges (it's a bar and bottle shop, and the bottle shop side tends to charge "bar" prices for bottles... some things are reasonably priced, but tons of stuff is also overpriced)

Keeping my eyes peeled hoping some of the local grocery stores that sell beer get it in the coming days
