We were at a bar last night and they had Abyss, to go, for $13.50. Bottles of vanilla, for on-site consumption only, were $25. Great bar prices.

Yup Abyss is turding up in Denver along with the rest of Deschutes limited releases from 2014... they must've upped production big time... Abyss was gone in like 2 seconds last year.

Woah, we only got one case of The Abyss here and it disappeared within minutes. Every other releases has been on the shelf for a little while though.

Try a saison. Might be a good step towards the sour, but not all the way there. I find a lot of newbies like these better than a very sour ale.

    Holy crap haha, that's insane!

If I can't find any, I'll definitely keep this offer in mind. I should have good chances though, as of a week ago a search near my zip code turned up nothing, now it's showing 9 places within the last couple days of searching, though only one of them I'd actually consider close to me, the others are a 30+ minute drive. A grocery store near me I'm guessing will end up getting it, considering they carry the other limited releases (despite just starting to sell beer 3 months ago), and another grocery store that has opened fairly recently is listed as carrying it

Let me know where this on-prem Vanilla for $25 is (via BM if you prefer) if you don't mind. I owe @ninjembro for some #gopickitupformebro action and might kidnap him since he just graduated and stuff.

I'm pretty open about where I get beer and don't mind directing folks to the right places. We were at Brew House last night. When I left they still had Abyss bottles at $13.50, as well as BCBS and BCBBW on draft where you get to keep a really nice glass for only $7.75.

Love it Ed, this is one of my favorite things to do!

    Great choices Mike!

There are a TON of IPA choices, Stone and Dogfish Head 60 Minute also come to mind as "exemplary of the style" without being too far out there. Bear Republic Racer 5, Ithaca Flower Power, Cigar City Jai Alai, also all great examples of excellent but 'tame' IPAs. I also second the above suggestion of a solid pilsner, DFH Piercing Pils just came out and would be very fresh, lead into the IPA with that, or better yet go from pilsner to APA to IPA as a progression. Tons of great APAs to choose from, but again the same advice holds true to not try to blow him away (Zombie Dust, Psuedo Sue, etc) but get a tame but well-crafted APA.

Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald is also a great example of the porter style, or there's always Fuller's.

La Fin du Monde is a great tripel choice, but you can also go with Westmalle, or Chimay, and Ommegang is coming out with one very soon that I assume will be a good representation of the style.

As for sour, I recommend Rodenbach Grand Cru, it's what turned me on to sour beer and from my first one. I also think it's a great representation of "sour beer" as a concept, and is one of the best Flanders Reds you'll find (Duchesse de Bourgenone would be a good backup, I just don't have a personal anecdote about it). Rodenbach Classic would also work just fine, but is not as good. Some of the tamer American Wild Ales wouldn't be a bad choice either, but it can be tough to pick an entry-level one. Maybe something fruity, and since you have the option of starting with syrup and then removing it, I like the Berliner Weisse idea above.

I'd skip Alpha King, I LOVE that beer (more than ZD actually) but I wouldn't say it's "for beginners". And to counter @Mikexw's idea, personally I would leave out Black IPA because there's so much going on, I love the style for that exact reason, but I think that's better for the 'intermediate' class. I like the amber idea, or maybe even go with a nice malty, nutty brown ale. If you can get it, I love Nebraska's Brunette.

Since it seems that this person is pretty green, I might relegate this to the "intermediate class" as well; @Tee2Grn makes a great point about keeping him from diving in if he doesn't like barrel character, but I don't see a complete noob going out and tracking down backwoods bastard or bcbs after their first tasting regardless.

If this guy is more advanced than I'm giving him credit for, then by all means Black IPA and something out of a barrel are excellent ideas.

I was very tempted to suggest adding saison outright, and find one that isn't sour at all like ommegang's hennepin (great entry-level saison to me) or saison dupont, which is funkier but more "traditional". I only didn't add it because saison is "light" and "belgiany", which also describes tripels.

Awesome. Hopefully this holds up through the weekend and I make it back to the region in time to enjoy this. If you want to join, I'm pretty sure I owe you beer for something... like that time you told me where I could go to get good beer, or that time I showed up at your place and drank a lot of beer.
