Is it me or is it the BCBS?

I'm right there with you OP. I had it for the first time this year and all I got was a bunch of bourbon barrel and alcohol. I've felt the same way about pretty much every bourbon barrel beer I've ever had. Bourbon barrel beers just aren't my thing. That being said tastes change over time. I remember trying scotch several years ago. I didn't like it. I tried the same scotch again after a few years and I actually enjoyed it.

I might try coming back to BCBS after a few years to see if my taste has changed.

One thing I've noticed is that if you're using a snifter type glass, and if you let it sit around a bit (not uncommon with someting like BCBS) some alcohol vapor can really accumulate in the space above the beer. I'll sometimes blow on it like it's a hot cup of coffee before I stick my nose in there.

edit: and by the way, I really like bourbon, and the flavor of it, and the aroma of BCBS; it's how incredibly boozy the aroma is that I don't like.

The smell should draw you in - bourbon is great.

Have you tried any of the BCBS variants? They are much more mellow in taste and not as "hot" as regular or coffee BCBS.

What's interesting is,,, I actually thought the 2014 vintage was not boozy at all compared to older vintages. I thought it was ready to be drunk - no aging needed!

I drank a 2011 BCBS over Thanksgiving. The bourbon smell ( which as a Booker's / Knob Creek drinker I enjoy) had mellowed quite a bit.

Break yourself in slowly with some Central Waters Bourbon Barrel Stout. After you get used to that you can handle BCBS no problem.
