Clear, overly fizzy straw color with no head or lacing would probably get a 1 from me.

I've yet to rate a 5 on appearance. It's reserved for that beer where I see angels beckoning me from within.

Beer isn't sexy, sir. Leilani Leeanne is sexy.

Appearance creates anticipation - when I look at a glass of Founders Breakfast Stout in all its gooey jet black glory I think "Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!". So accordingly I rate a beers appearance on how much I want to "tuck in" rather than any standardised brewing guidelines.

Also appearance is only worth 5% in my scoring system (aka BA's scoring system) so it isn't a make-or-break aspect in my ratings bro.

TL;DR Stouts should be menacing, Pale Ales should be full of yeasty bits (IMO), and a Wit should be as witty as possible (I find dry humour in my Wits works best).

Quit flaunting that beautiful beer I can't get here in Australia!
