"We" are the craft brew myth-shatterers.

Nothing like the continual "off topic posts" about the definition of craft beer, versus the topic of "most googled beer names in 2014"....man, very strange

Trouble with "craft" is that it never has been defined in any meaningful way. Most mentions of "craft" beer in this site render the word redundant.Like the embarrasing habit of beginning a sentence with "So". Or having to "pre book" a table.
Time it was abandoned. Beer does not brew itself, regardless of whether or not you enjoy any one in particular it's the result of skills.

This shouldn't be funny, but I did have to chuckle a bit because this whole post somehow went completely sideways right off the line. lol

In response to your original post and the reason behind this whole thread, I think it is pretty cool that SN made it on there. They may not be the #1 craft brewery out there, but even in my area it seems like their product is quickly popping up everywhere.

I completely agree though that Keystone making it that high on the list has got to do with the Keystone Pipeline buzz. Keystone has almost fallen into obscurity at this point, I can't imagine for a second that there are that many people searching the beer.

Look at the top 50 beers on this site. People think hard to get means tastes better and easier to get equals crap. Seems to me anyway that's the way the attitude is shifting.

    Perhaps not.

I think of "craft" being about HOW you make something, not how MUCH of it you make.

If you're a really productive and efficient craftsman ... do you suddenly become a factory or a machine when you cross some imaginary productivity line?

Is there any batch size criteria? The variability, e.g. Celebration thru the season, is what seems to make it craft.

I wonder if the North Carolina activity and the Beer Camp Across America project were responsible for a search spike.

Exactly.A brewery has to be absolutely tiny for there to be any "hands on" approach by the brewer.Practically all "craft" beer is machine made. The only hands on part might be in shovelling out the spent grains.

Actually, he was making the exact opposite argument. What about small test batches when designing recipes? Yes, sometimes machines can give priority to quantity > efficiency, but there are plenty of examples to the contrary, ie.: BrauKon.

Srsly ppl, the craft definition discussion is DONE. Please.

Finally we are back on topic! I disagree, however. I think people forget that the community on this website probably doesn't come close to representing the majority of beer/craft drinkers, and the hype/snobbery can be misleading. The other day I heard a guy at a craft brewery ask for a recommendation, telling the bartender he only drinks "wheat beers." They didn't have any. Not sure why he didn't try their golden or pils.

Interesting. Seems to me like this Beer Camp has been a massively successful publicity campaign; I'd be interested to see some numbers on that subject.
