Dark mild is quite a recent evolution of the species. Before WW1 all mild was pale and about 6% ABV.The low hops derive from the fact that it's a child of the ale family. We still talk about mild ale but bitter beer.Though look at this ; barclayperkins.blogspot.com/2011/02/mild-bitter-ale.html

Good point in general. I love a challenge and I think I'll take yours bill. Milds are woefully under represented in our reviews. I'm no different. That will need to change.

Problem is that I drink them in a pub, probably have a few more brews to follow and when the time comes to write a review I either clean forget to do it or can't remember things in enough detail. It's not like sitting at home with a bottle.
Regarding Adnam's Mild, it isn't listed on their website so I assume it's an occasional brew.Maybe there will be some around in May.Two of what I regard as their best beers do occur fleetingly- Old and Extra, both of which deserve to be on the regular list

I'll be back in London next week, ticking up a storm. If any more milds cross my path, into the database they go!

In Scotland milds are pretty rare but when you spot them they really can be delicious. Dark Munro, for example, is mm mmm good.

Black Cat is really good even bottled, I've not had Cains mild in a long time but they are two good examples of the style since Dark mild has it's biggest support in Lancashire

Depends what you mean by "traditional". Until around 1900 ALL Milds were pale.

Thanks to both of you for setting me on the straight and narrow - you learn something every day! I really need to do some reading about the history of british beers and brewing.....

There are two main sources of reliable information on the subject; one is patto1ro's own blog (plus his publications) http://barclayperkins.blogspot.com/
and the other is Martyn Cornell's work
http://zythophile.wordpress.com/ and his book "Amber, Gold and Black" is a definitive source

Unfortunately much if not most of the stuff you see written about beer is based on folklore, assumptions and myths. The two gentlemen I've mentioned are carefully researched from contemporary material.

I happen to be the proud owner of 'Amber, Gold and Black', but haven't sat down and read it yet. Must try and do that!

I had some Cain's Dark Mild in a can. Cannot get the cask version in the States. It was my first and only experience with Dark Mild. It rather reminded me of a rather thin Porter. I do not think it is representative of the style. I have read Amber, Gold and Black. Fascinating stuff. I recommend it.

I just about finished another glass from the can and I DO think it represents the style rather well but what do I know? My experiences with Dark Milds are sadly very limited.

I think its about 15 years or so since I had beer out of a can lol

Has the quality of beer in can's improved?
