Helles. Weihenstephaner Original and Hofbrau Original prime examples of "Beer beer".

A proper pint glass too , 20 ounces of sheer delight.
I see Timothy Taylor's Landlord has been cited , good choice. Well balanced with lots of lovely hops which taste like hops and not grapefruit.

Is that why the Wild Black & Tan Kölsch never took off?

I think it has to be the AAL. When you are talking to someone and they say "I don't like beer", what do they mean?

Then you hand them another new type or brand of beer.

I'm interested in everyone's subjective outlook on beer, obviously there is no true quintessential beer, or person, or song, or dog, but we all have our token representation of those things.

The beer nerd in me would say something more balanced, like a Czech Pils (German would fit the bill too), but my kneejerk reaction when I think "beer" is always a Helles. Specifically came here to post your choice of Weihenstephan Original. Doesn't get more old school than the "Original" from the world's oldest brewery right?

That doesn't mean that they've been brewing it for centuries of course, simply that there's been a brewery there for a long time!

I honestly think it would be silly to live in America and have myself claim the quintessential beer to be something other than Budweiser, Pabst, Coors...

quin·tes·sen·tial representing the most perfect or typical example of a quality or class.

If you asked anyone outside of BeerAdvocate this question they would come back with Bud Light, but the point stands. Don't get me wrong, there are a few staples now: Boston Lager, SNPA, Anchor Steam, Brooklyn Lager... but they are still a flash in the pan compared to those, in my opinion.

Now, if we're talking the world, forget it. Too much history there for me to think about.

    All aspects of beer......impossible

Cann't imagine a roasty, chewey, bitter, hop bomb, with the yeast beautifully shining through, and very delicate beer.

Pils, pale ale, and bitter (ordinary or best mainly). I think marzens/oktoberfest pop up occasionally as well. Really anything with a copper ish hue and a fluffy white head.
