Thanks for the reply, but sorry, I didn't catch your meaning — what is the significance of 'Session' as applied to 'Pils'? You're not saying that all Czech beer styles are considered Pilsners, right? Although I'm no ardent supporter of taxonomies, to my understanding it seems like naming something 'Session Bitter' when 'Bitter' would have done just fine.

For the American consumer, Pilsner comes with an expectation of ABV, be it Czech or German, of about 5%. Session communicates it is lower than standard. Bitter comes with an expectation of ABV, which is already low, so Session is not required. I brew a Bitter, I call it Bitter.

And no, I'm saying that all Czech beer styles are considered Pilsners, quite the opposite. I also brew a Polotmavy and Černé, styles that also have strength categories as detailed in Ron's blog.

Basically praises towards Notch and anyone else that is doing it right. Yes, crapped on the whole IPA / Saison session thing. A few other comments we'd agree on or agree to disagree on. ;-)

As we move in to the new year, I vote to leave the term "session" in 2014. Wait, wasn't this supposed to happen last year?

Why all this cutting on NPR??!! I am about as middle class as it gets and I listen to NPR everyday for at least 20-30 minutes. I've probably learned more listening to NPR than I did during 4 years of college!

Because "hating" on everything makes us all feel cooler on the Internet.

What I hate are people so devoid of a sense of humor that jokes become "hating" in their minds.

^This. Agreed, just had a 'session' style IPA last night and it was watery and one noted. The balance was all off. It was all hop bitter, with really no other flavors to offset. I love a good IPA or DIPA that offsets the hops with a nice malt backbone, or other flavors. It was horribly lacking in this regard.

Only session iOS I've had to date that I enjoyed was the 2 roads session ipa. Excellent flavor, body, smell. If it didn't say session on the can I would have had no idea. And I generally don't really love the stuff they make

its about two years late on any trend

but it used to be more like 7 years; it's improved vastly since the 1990s....(or maybe it hasnt improved at all and I was younger and hipper then and my age is showing....)

I'm not opposed to session beers, just session IPAs. If we had some better Pilsner production in the US I'd be all over it, but as it is I just have to live with having fewer numbers of IPAs and porters and such on week nights.

I listen to WUNC here in North Carolina and it's a first class news source across the board. I heard that piece and thought it to be very well done, accurate, and not "hoity toity" in the least. Now, let's contemplate a Fox News version!

Just poking fun at NPR voices and their tendency to speak only of more worldly subject matter that can sometimes come off as being slightly pretentious- just like Saturday Night Live has done in the past. Don't think Lorne Greene is a Fox News fan. Just because I mention NPR doesn't automatically make me a Fox News fan.

    ,

If you learned that much from NPR, you should check out Prager University. In all fairness I do both.

Back to beer. Posted about this on BA several years go asking what people thought about the lack at the time of low abv or mild beers. It was interesting. Many if not most folks commented on not wanting to pay a premium for less alcohol. Taste over abv in my opinion. Good to see I and the folks who responded positively have company.

Since you're the one making the comparison, I assume you mean you agree that NPR is as far to the left as Fox News is to the right. Right?

I posted a similar question a few months ago with a poll that had interesting results. Although everyone here talks about how a beer tastes, many put a high value on a beer's ABV. I think that sentiment is slowly changing though.

People seem to think so. I don't find my NPR station to be anywhere near any political edge. I often laugh at national Fox News as just pure entertainment, not much more. With Colbert gone, who knows?
