Whenever I go to my local store/bar, I'm always finding myself blowing right past the breweries I 'know' don't make beers that are for me, and I'm sure I'm missing a few gems by doing this. As I'm sure most of you have tried way more beers than I have, and I don't really feel like wading through the mundane to get to the exemplary, how's about letting me know about some good beers made by breweries you wouldn't have expected it to come from?!

I have a love/hate relationship with Carolina Brewery in Chapel Hill (most of their stuff is pretty meh-I do like Bullpen PA), but I went in and tried Jumpin Bean Coffee Stout, and holy hell it was good.

I dont know if you would consider Rogue a mediocre brewery...they have a 93 overall rating on this site, but definitely get shit on a lot in the forums ("Beard yeast" beer projects ceratinly do not help). I am going on the assumption a lot of BAs would consider them mediocre, so I will put my votes in for Hazelnut Nectar and Shakespear Stout. These are both standouts from a brewery that I do not really pay much attention to anymore.

Breckenridge 471 Small Batch IPA.. I've never been impressed by Breckenridge, but this one has always been impressive and a winner in my book..

I agree with you on this. In my opinion they think too highly of themselves. However, hazelnut brown nectar is a damn fine brown ale. I'm also a fan of their Dirtoir, even though I'm not a huge dark lager fan.

I never paid much attention to Mayflower Brewing. Then one night I tried their porter. It was absolutely amazing. When I checked the profile page on BA I saw that the bros. gave it a 100! Ha ha ha.

The first time I had 21st Amendment, someone (who still won't fess up to it) brought a 12 of their hell or high watermelon to our party. We drain poured the remaining 11 the next morning. Couldn't take it, and it ruined my expectations for that brewery. I might have to give it another chance now though.

Never been much of an Independence Brewing fan, but I love their Convict Hill Oatmeal Stout. Same with Shiner, but their Black Lager is always a pleasant surprise.

I've not had anything by Breckenridge that has impressed me, including the 471, but that's my opinion.

Don't bother, other than the Hop Crisis, they don't do anything that excites me either.

For me it's G' Knight. I love that beer, but the rest of OB's stuff I've not been impressed with.

Rogue was the best example that came to my mind. A small number of good ones among a much larger number of very mediocre (and arguably overpriced) ones.

Really? I like G'Knight, but I always thought that Gubna and Ten Fidy were fine examples of their style.

don't like deviant dales, ten fidy, or dales...

I'm gonna list otter creek and their black ipa, not anything mind blowing by any stretch but a great example of the style.

In New England, Wachussett would fit that bill. Personally, I think they make good brews, nothing great, but all solid and extremely drinkable. However, their Larry and Winter Ale are exceptional and I believe their milk stout, is way better than Left Hand's.

Deviant Dales was average for a DIPA, got it's assed kicked by Double Jack and Port Anny when I had them sampled together. Dales, another one I never cared for. Too dank and malty for a pale ale.

I didn't care for the Gubna, I was one that got the onion/scallion flavor in it. Ten Fidy I've never been impressed with, I could name a whole bunch of Impy stouts I rather have before it, plus it's pricy for me. I just thought GK was a great example of that style and super drinkable for the abv.

The sour style beers from Upland. I don't care for any of their house or seasonal beers except for those.
