    Let me try this again.
A customer came into the the store Friday (yesterday) and we started talking about beer. The Heady Topper throngs had subsided, as we had sold out about an hour before, and the discussion eventually rested upon the topic of "Whales." He recognized me from a Kate the Great Day at Portsmouth Brewery in 2011 or 2012 (we didn't meet or talk) and I told him about a KtG vertical tasting (2009-2012) I had done with 4 friends in December of 2013. So, he was excited, to say the least, and asked me about the value of that KtG vertical versus the value of the Armand 4 Set (he had tasted only 2 of them. ) Without ever tasting any of the Armand 4 set, I said I would take that KtG vertical over any 4 year (or season) vertical. Has anyone had all 8 beers?[IMG]

To me, the Seasons are infinitely more valuable. They're more expensive by a fair amount. I prefer gueuzes to imperial stouts and the former take a lot more effort (and I would argue skill) to put together. They're one-offs that will never be made again. Portsmouth is not Drie Fonteinen by any stretch of the imagination. The Seasons, particularly Lente and Zomer are name-dropped often as some of the best representatives of their style; KtG is not in the top ten RISs. The Seasons are four different beers, whereas obviously the KtG vert is four of the same beers (that we don't know how they've aged). Gueuzes age far better than any stout.

So to repeat, I'd much rather have a set of Seasons than a four-year vertical of KtG.

Thanks for the input! Hopefully someday soon we can test our theories!

I bet that a single bottle of Lente would be better than a 4 years vertical of KtG. Lente is the best Gueuze / sour beer out there. I haven't found many beers that are better than Lente. While KtG is a pretty good beer, it just isn't even close to being on the same level of greatness as Lente.

Both would be exciting to me, but I would take the 4 seasons over almost any other set of four beers in the world. I have never tried them and probably will never dedicate the money and time to make an attempt, but the chance would be one of the greatest in my history of "greatest beer moments".

I had/have the Seasons set.... and have had all the Kates back to '07 (and still have an '08). But just like everybody else here, IMO the Armands are special.

Kate is a pretty awesome RIS though, but a vertical is a far different animal than 4x (expensive!) world class Gueuze bottles.

I've had 3 vintages of Kate and all of the 4 Seasons. I love gueuze and stouts. I have Lente and Zomer in my cellar and wouldn't trade either of them for the full vertical of KtG. And don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed KtG.
