Generally my specialty glasses are for beer only; I've relegated the shakers to general duty. We have those in a different cabinet for water, milk, soda, OJ, whatever. (Just not a big fan when SWMBO stirs her chocolate milk in my beer ones...)
THe tulips, nonics and so forth are in a different cabinet, and she doesn't take them for normal liquids.
I also usually wash them by hand, though in a case where there a lot, I will put them in the dishwasher. I just don't make a habit of that.

Well when you have 200 or more beer glasses like I do they occasionally get used for other things. I tend not to use them for other beverages but I don't make it a house rule or get obsessed with it.

My niece gets a kick out of drinking any beverage out of my beer glasses. She calls them my "fancy glasses". She has an artistic mind, and appreciates the different shapes, hand feel, etc. She enjoys it, and is careful with them, so i have no problem with it. But drinking OJ from a hefeweizen glass just doesn't look right. My English style dimple mugs are perfect for hot chocolate however.

At least she appreciates my glassware. The rest of our family prefers to drink out of Busch Light cans. Or wine from plastic cups (with ice, mind you).

For all of you who say a glass is a glass/a vessel is a vessel, there is plenty of science to back up your claim. Dan Ariely argues pretty cleanly (pardon the pun...) that glass is glass be it for beer or wine. Blind taste tests with experts, done at MIT, and all the "proof" that goes with said appeal to authority (Predictably Irrational, BTW).

Having said that, I am going to throw in with the designated glass crowd. My pints can hold anything, but my imperials are beer only. My tulips are beer only. It has little to do with the chemical make up of the silicon and whatever else goes into the making of the glass and more about the experience of enjoying the beer. There is just something about heavy hop aroma spilling out the top of an imperial pint, the brett funk wafting up from a tulip. It makes for an experience. I am using sense of smell and taste for sure, but also sight and touch.

What is the worry about the glasses being used with other liquids? You wash them between use right? Not sure why it is a problem. But hey to each his own.

Well if you have inexpensive shaker pints or stuff you buy at Walmart there isn't a problem, but again some of my beer glasses I cannot easily or cheaply replace. Some of these glasses are as valuable as the beer we quaff out of them.

Everyone in my house knows my beer glasses, and my wife's wine glasses, are off limits. We have plenty of other glasses for normal use.

I am the same--4 Sam Adams' Perfect Pints for lagers, 2 nonic pints for ales. Ironically, before I got the nonic pint glasses, I had about 6 regular pint glasses for ales...now I use them for anything.

I'm more worried about my glasses breaking. I have beer glasses for everyone else.

To amend my earlier post, I will agree with those who keep some glasses relegated to beer-only due to being expensive or rare. There's no way in hell I'd let my Kwak glass be used by anyone aside from myself, for example. That being said, I do have multipurpose glassware.

I mean, I tend to use my beer glasses for beer only, but it's just glassware. You can clean it. It might look a little weird to drink Dr Pepper from a tulip glass, but whatever. I wouldn't tell someone not to do it.

Now, I wouldn't give someone one of my more expensive pieces for random drinks, but most of my glassware is pretty standard stuff, and not very expensive.

I tend to agree with those who say they prefer their beer glasses be used for beer and keep them in a separate cabinet. I have a pair of Spiegelau IPA glasses which are pretty fragile and aren't really appropriate for anything else. I have some tulip glasses picked up on eBay and an assortment of different style glasses with German and Belgian beer logos on them. It's kind of become a fun offshoot of the craft beer hobby, the search for glassware. Antique shops, flea markets, eBay etc... All good places to find the stuff I don't let anyone use for for anything other than good beer.

Id vote for Lighten Up. Life's too short for that kind of needless stress.

@nc41. That makes sense. I would agree with that. Most of the previous posts eluded to not allowing it because other liquids were in the glass.

Guests in my house are treated like guests. I wouldn't ever want to make them feel uncomfortable. That said, if it's a favorite glass, or has sentimental value and I don't want it potentially broken, I keep it away from the rest so as to ensure it's safety. But I also live with a professional potter who thinks all things should be enjoyed out or ceramic or clay. That is a far bigger issue.

Unless the glass is rare or expensive, I wouldn't sweat it too much. I have enough glass/plastic for regular drinks so that my beer glass (which is cheap I would add) isn't even used unless we are too lazy to do the dishes. So, my beer glass is typically used for beer, but I don't balk at using it for something else.
