Not true. Goose Island's Night Stalker is the base of BCBS.......

OK; so then the statement that the base beer hadn't been released was false. LOL

Not true. Goose Island's Night Stalker is the base of BCBS.......

Please point out where you got this information. I remember being told by people at Goose Island that neither Big John nor Nightstalker were the base for Boubon County. So a little more information would be useful....

Do more research boss, the actual base beer for BCBS is called "Cook County Stout," and has only been released during a very small handful of special tappings by GI, but never commercially. This beer, the one they are calling "unremarkable" will never again be released to the public (though it was for a select few lucky folks that attended these special tappings). Night Stalker is Cook County Stout that has been dry-hopped. Big John is Cook County Stout that has been aged on cacoa nibs. So, to reiterate my original point that Goose Island has "never" released the base for BCBS, which is what I was replying to, is total bologna. I'd trust the words of a GI brewer over Esquire magazine...

Ok cool. No need for more (any) research. It's just an article. Lol.

That's most likely true, which is why they come out so great after being barrel aged for so long. They're specifically brewed with the intention of barrel aging. Although, Narwhal is a great RIS on it's own and the barrel aged version just made it that much better... so you never know.

Why would a so-called disgusting beer suddenly turn delicious after aging in barrels? Makes no sense.

I can't wait for Parabola. I find BCBS a little too sweet as well. Parabola is tremendous.

Disgusting in the sense of the beer being overly harsh, overly sweet, or completely unbalanced in some sense or other. Made to age.

I thought Bcbs was too sweet too on my first bottle or two. My palate shifted a bit , and I can pick up dark bitter chocolate in there too. It's now easily my favorite easy to get BA stout.

I just recently discovered FW (love what I've had) and I'm looking forward to this Parabola release. I just hope I am able to get my hands on a bottle. We shall see...

It does make sense. Don't think about it so literally... it's because the beer was brewed solely with barrel aging and the effects/chemistry it will have on the base beer in mind. So for example, more pronounced bitterness or harsh notes could be sought after for the base beer, because of the balancing act that will then result.

Think of it sort of like a golf-swing, when you know you tend to hook the ball right... you may choose to position or point yourself to the far left, so you can hit the ball straight. There's more to it than that (chemistry), but it's a good simple, quick analogy.

    Hitting the ball right
Hitting the ball right is actually a slice if you are a right handed golfer.
