I'm abstaining from LIFs until I run my own. I think that's only fair. Plus, I don't want to take any beer from you, you are on my list. One day, you will be on the receiving end of a ninja box. Probably won't be too soon, but it will come.

On a different note, how cold is too cold to ship? Not to anyone in this thread, but I need to get a box out, target isn't cold so not a worry, but pretty cold here.

You don't owe me anything, and I'm guessing you (like me) are a Jet fan and the playoffs are just too painful for you to think about...

I am not a jets fan, my football fandom is very complicated. It is the only sport I don't root local, except nba where I don't root at all.

I'm actually a patriots fan (which doesn't please you, I'm sure) but was raised a giants fan. I was young enough that when Parcells and all the giants players went to the patriots in the very early 90's that I wanted to keep rooting for those players

If the low temp is 30 or higher, I'll ship without worrying. I'd say you 'should' be able to ship down to about 25 degrees assuming that it's not going to sit around in your state for more than 12 hours or so and should get to somewhere warmer than 30 after that. Considering the freezing temp of beer is around 26-28 degrees (depending on ABV and OG), warehouse temps should typically be 10-15F minimum higher than outside temps during cold weather, and the fact that we all pack beer in some type of insulation, realistically I'd expect it would take 2 days in 20F temps or 1 day in 10F temps to actually freeze beer. But I'm not willing to risk it to find out

Box now may not be going out tomorrow. Had anticipated picking up the last item or two for my box after work today and shipping tomorrow during errands, and I can't even get out of my parking spot to get to work. The snow isn't even heavy (yet?) but people are moving slow, nobody let me out of my spot for 11 trafflic light rotations (my house sits between two lights that just LOVE to synchronize), and when I finally had an opening, my steering completely locked up on me. Still going to try to get out tomorrow, but it'll depend on road quality (and my cars ability to... work)

Edit: Also depends on temperatures I suppose. It's supposed to stay pretty cold near me the next few days, but just checked my targets forecast, and it's more favorable. Last time I shipped to that area it was only a 2 day transit IIRC, so if I can make it out tomorrow, I'd feel pretty comfortable sending it.

I just assumed you were a Jet fan from your avatar (I also thought you were a Met fan, and those usually go together). I have no problem with Pats fans as long as they have a valid reason for being one :-) and aren't just frontrunners

I am a Mets fan, that was solely due to the fact that my older brother was a Yankees fan. The Patriots were pretty horrible when I started rooting for them, but hasn't been too hard lately.

To my target, following this logic, I will not ship till next week, but I do have your bottles ready to go

I had a box come to me from NH this past week, I think it was as close to an overnight delivery as possible with how close we are and the beers were "cold". I was shocked how cold they were since my local temp was only in the 40s.

Yeah, target weather is a lot more important to me. Especially since it could be out on a truck/porch for 12 hours before being brought inside, plus it could already be cold starting out so wouldn't take as long to freeze. At least when I'm sending beer I know it starts from room temperature so will take a bit to freeze.

    Yes, yes it was.
I saw a table of ABV/Freezing temp, I'll see if I can track it down; but of course @treznor's points about warehouse temp & insulation play a role as well, so you have a bit of leeway between atmospheric temp and temp of the beer.

I've shipped when it's in the high 20s for highs even as long as it's not getting super cold at night. I think the bigger bogey is shipping to cold weather and making sure your package gets inside after delivery. I sent a box back from NC and it sat on my front stoop only for maybe an hour on Saturday and things were starting to freeze (and it was ~25 on Saturday here). Also making sure you ship on a Monday or such that it gets to your destination without a weekend stop in a warehouse somewhere is critical.

That said, I wouldn't take any chances with the anything north of a curved line from montana to KC to Boston right now. supposed to warm up a bit towards the end of next week.

everyone is going to have different opinions on this one. I will ship from my location at just about any temperature. I drop it off inside, it goes on a truck to the sorting facility (again inside) and then on it's way. Not too much of an issue. My concern is always the receiving end as the box could end up on the truck waiting for delivery (they sometimes pack the trucks the night before) or sitting on a porch. I go with 10 or less as the low, and less than 30 as high temp at receiving end for day before and day of scheduled delivery as the no ship temp.

No guarantees, just how I do it.

Yea, it's not bad at my targets location, so I'm not sure. It's pretty damn cold here though. I would drop it off at UPS store.

I'm dropping several boxes tomorrow, and we're not much different than you. It is a risk, so go with what you feel comfortable with.

One recommendation on this, and all shipments, is to put everything inside a plastic bag. That way a leak is contained, and box still goes through. If I double box, I but the inside box in the plastic bad, having the cardboard help soak it up and keep the plastic from getting a hole. I've gotten to using the case boxes from the package store, put in all the beers wrap padded well and standing up, put that in a bag, and put that inside a med sized lowes/home depot box.

    Cheers
    Dave
