Best buy date was in July, 2015. Seemed like a massive, syrupy, everything -but-the-kitchen-sink approach with just the right balance, with a mouthfeel totally appropriate for the name.

I had a Resin last night that was best by May 2015. Maltier than I like, but not bad.

Sounds like someone threw in some old Resins into the box vs some fresh Maine beers. While Resin might mellow over time, there is no way it could be qualified as a barleywine. We need to get you some fresh samples.

yup, that's how its supposed to taste, and how it DOES taste when fresh

Kitchen sink approach? Please elaborate. The formulation is very minimal in its approach, especially on the malt side.

We gotta get you a fresh 6pack.

I guess I was describing the fact that while there was a big hop presence, it also seemed very malty, like, say, a barleywine. The person who sent it to me had a similar opinion of it. I received it in early fall, and it had a best-by date of July of next year, so I can't think it was too terribly old.
See above. By your reactions I'm beginning to think it's supposed to taste much less balanced than mine was. While still interested to try fresher example, if it's a totally sticky hop bomb that burns the enamel off teeth I might actually like it less. I've had some ultra citrusy booze bomb DIPAs that were so intense and so unbalanced that they were a stone's throw from pruno - and that's not something I think I would enjoy. Regardless, thanks for your interest

I'm in Seattle, so not until I get down to Portland again, sadly.

Thanks for the detailed feedback. By no means was I implying that it was supposed to be less balanced than your sample, or that it was supposed to burn the enamel off your teeth (although there are some hardcore BAs that long for this!). What I was saying is that its supposed to be fresh, vibrant, citrusy, juicy, piney, and balanced. In no way should it resemble a sticky, syrupy, barley-wine type complexity. It should finish light and clean, with balanced hop flavors.

would be curious to know where you had the sample from last night...the ones at the tasting were not the ones with the code date you mentioned... anyways I'll hit you up with a PM, cheers

It was purchased at a bottle shop in Connecticut over Thanksgiving by a friend of mine who brought a couple back home.

One of the hallmarks of everything I tried last night, was how light and clean everything was. It was one of the features I most appreciated about the beers I sampled. Very impressive...

I'd just like to say that Sixpoint has an amazing PR team. Texwild does a great job here for Fremont, but Sixpoint works insanely hard to keep up their reputation.

Had Resin in NYC back in October, thought it was solid.

Hey maybe if Six Point sells well in Portland it will inspire Brooklyn Brewery to venture to the West Coast :grinning:

Is Sixpoint still being brewed in Brooklyn, or did it move to another spot? I know their facility was impacted by Hurricane Sandy, but I didn't follow what happened after that

I picked up each of the Sixpoint cans at the Mongers: Sweet Action, Bengali, Resin, Crisp

Sweet Action and Crisp were alright to me, if not a bit boring. Resin tasted straight up medicinal on my palate - almost like cough syrup (wife agreed). Bengali was the best of the bunch to me. The best thing was the price I was able to pick them up for around 2 bucks each on the Beer Mongers.

I probably won't go back to them, but I'm glad I tried them. I don't deny the national praise they receive, but they are just not the beer for me.

I was talking to Shane yesterday about pre-order quantities for Hi-Res (which should be here late next week), and the conversation sort of meandered into a discussion of IPAs and how people from different regions perceive them. His feeling (and he can correct me if I misstate it), was that hearing praise for his hoppy offerings out here was more validating due to how many people love IPAs and the huge number of stand out offerings that his beer is going up against, and one of the many reasons they decided to expand out here was to see if their beer could hang with the best of our region.

It was already a pretty cool discussion, but then his eyes lit up and he asked if we'd listen to a crazy idea he'd been pondering. We said of course, and he starts telling us that Resin and Bengali were both being kegged that day/night, and how he'd like to call the brewers and have them rack off a 1/6bbl of one of them, take it to FedEx, and overnight it to Portland so that we could experience the freshest possible beer we're ever likely to see from them.

I thought he was just pulling our legs, but I got a text from him later in the afternoon confirming that it would happen, but I don't know which beer it'll be yet.

tl;dr: If you want to try something ridiculously fresh from Sixpoint I'd suggest showing up Thursday afternoon.

Everything that is canned and most of the kegs are brewed through an alternating proprietorship agreement with City Brewery in Memphis, TN. No cans are brewed or packaged in Brooklyn and a small amount of beer is actually brewed and kegged in Brooklyn.

From talking to him at GG during the bottle share a few weeks back, I just got the impression that he's super passionate about beer in general (I bought him a glass of WFO IPA and you could just see his eyes light up when he smelled it), but of course all the more so about his own beer. Also, even though the crowd at GG was a bit tipsy (well, I know I was), and was just into having fun and drinking a lot of good beer, he seemed to be intent on talking to folks, hearing what they had to say, and trying to learn as much as he possibly could in a very short while (and under very limited circumstances) about the local beer scene and type of consumers he's likely to encounter out here. I know I was very impressed.

I don't have much to add except the Bengali Tiger is just not a very good beer. Branding/marketing is cool, but overall a completely unnecessary addition to our shelves.

We gotta get you some Hi-Res my friend. Also, if you like dark beers, the BEAST MODE will be hitting shelves in OR next week.

    Ahhhhh.... Mr. Maltmaster420. You must be Mr. N*** Y***** or Mr. C**** O***** ;-)

The Bengali is actually going to the racker right now. The fresh kegs should be rolling off the line by about 5 or 6pm this evening. This means if we can get that sixtel bubble-wrapped, boxed, and at the FedEx drop-off station by midnight, by the time it lands at Belmont tomorrow it could be less than 24 hours old. Psyched!

Pretty hard not to be, one of my favorite places in the world!

Yeah John, and I realized how much I have to learn about the scene out here. It is much more rich, layered, and complex than the "outsider's view" which is what most people from the East Coast and Midwest have of this place. I appreciate you walking me through all of the different beers at the tasting.

*side note - I did find it a bit amusing that everyone on the West Coast comes to bottle shares with East Coast beers. :-)

why don't you guys meet us down at Belmont tomorrow night when we tap the freshest keg of Bengali ever to hit Oregon?

Maybe you have not been to enough yet:wink: One of the idiosyncrasies I love about PDX is how many times at bottle shares people not only bring PDX and area beers (think smaller releases, vintages, verts or growler only beers from the likes of Upright, Logsdon, The Commons etc...), but everyone is super excited about them:slight_smile:
