Anybody know of good bottle shops or places with a respectable tap list in or near Bergen County, NJ? Total Wine has large selection but it appears to value quantity over quality.

I usually just go to TW for seasonals and certain imports. The shelf stuff has questionable dates. They do get loads of some special releases at times, though.

Whole Foods is the only place around here that carries Carton beers, but you do have to get the timing right.

For bars in Bergen, Andy's Corner Bar in Bogota is the best known.

In Rockland County, you can find both things at Growler and Gill, on Route 59 in Nanuet, NY- a combination bar/bottle shop. Pretty cool, laid-back vibe, too

Cable Beverages nearby is just a store, but has usually a better overall selection. They are close enough that you can hit up both in the same trip.

Tongo pretty much summed it up. Shop rite in Northvale is my hidden gem. Not the best selection but beats out most places ive been to in bergen county. Maybe beverage barn too which is less than half a mile away from shop rite.

Bottle King in Glen Rock has one of the better selections around, or at least better prices.

Copper Mine Pub in North Arlington crushes Andy's in every way possible (sorry @TongoRad!) and yes, that's still Bergen County

Very possible! I don't do too much drinking around here these days, mostly because of the driving, so don't really have a favorite bar. Honestly, I prefer to take a cheap bus ride into NYC.

Maybe I should also look into the bus routes to North Arlington .

OK- I just looked it up, and can't believe that's still in Bergen County down there . I'm at the total other extreme end, so it's not exactly convenient for me, at least, but still a maybe a good suggestion for the OP.

Okey dokey- just looked that up, too. I'm guessing you use it regularly, so how reasonable would you say the rates are?

crazy reasonable in northern NJ, something like $1.10/mile - just never use it if you see that it's a "surge" (normal rates start to exponentially go up 2x, 3x, etc.). I love uber to get my sorry butt home

Bergen County is big so be more specific. if you live above Rt 80 then just throw the expectation of a good taplist out the window or go to Rockland County. Below 80 just go to the copper mine

another thought, take the extra 10-minute drive and go visit Liquor Outlet in Boonton - they have an excellent selection

Thanks everyone for the leads. I'm in the Englewood/Bergenfield area. Nobody will mistake this area for Brooklyn as far as beer goes. I'll make a point to visit the Copper Mine if I'm in that area. Blind Boar in Norwood is a decent place--affordable barbecue and a respectable tap/bottle list. Won't find any gems there but there's typically Sculpin, Breakfast Stout or something of that nature. I made it out to Mamaroneck, NY to check out Half Time. That's worth the excursion or a quick detour if you're ever near Westchester or passing by the Tappan Zee bridge

honestly, just hop on the Palisades and go to Cable Beverage up in Bardonia, NY (essentially Nanuet)

Ramsey Liquors also has a good selection especially if you like Belgians. Although with new ownership (Couple of months now) and a new beer manager I don't know how things will chance.

Hey brotha if your making it up to Blind Boar you might as well make the slightly longer trip and hit up "Shepard and Knucklehead." I'm not the biggest fan of the place but they have a crazy number of taps and some real solid stuff - plus they almost always have Carton and Kane on draft so I can always fall back on NJ finest. Never been to Andy's or Copper Mine which is probably something that should be corrected. And yeah there's a plethora of options in NYC.

Also if your in the Bergenfield area I'd suggest going to the Dumont Bottle King. They have a decent selection and I've grabbed a few gems there (last week I scooped Clown Shoes Extremely Angry Beast). If your going to make the hike up to Rockland County Id suggest Cable Beverage over Growler and Gill; if your just looking for a bottleshop (ie not a bar and you don't care about ambiance) Cable kills G&G every-time w/ selection and price.

Shep and blind boar are in complete opposite directions coming from Bergenfield. Dumont bottle King is a decent store. Expect the most limited stuff to be gone the day it comes in. Their Hunterdon delivery day is Monday so stalk the new releases on Friday from Hunterdon then show up Monday for the new releases. The only 2 places to get carton cans in Bergen county are drinks in HoHoKus and whole foods Paramus. Being where you are andy's is worth a pop in/draft list monitoring. Linwood wine in fort lee supposedly gets the good stuff too.

Grant Street Cafe in Dumont can have some really nice beers on tap as well.

I recently hit the Buy-Rite on 1&9 (Tonelle Ave) in Fairview (Just south of Ridgefield) and was very impressed. Look them up on beermenues.com. They are good about updating on that site. Great selection, with a 6-tap-always-rotating Growler selection. Place blows away Total Wine, IMO. Similar to, but better than (due to the growler choices) to Bottle King, Glen Rock, which I also like.

while I will agree that they do have a decent selection, their prices are outrageous. I remember them telling me that they were selling DF120 for 17 or 18 a bottle? THAT'S CRAZY!!!!

I usually go to Heights Beer and Wine on Rt 17 south, just behind the Quest Fitness. The people there are really nice, and the selection is pretty outstanding.... and the prices are far better than Buy-Rite.
