Does it really need to be?

It's funny you mentioned this as I am getting my older brother into the big stouts, and he was the one who mentioned making a beer-cation to MI this year as he loves Kuhnenns especially DRIPA, and I couldn't think of a more perfect reason to go now.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to look far to see the right answer. Thanks for nailing it right from the first reply!

3 trends that are continuing to increase that I personally don't care for in this order. Everybody has their own opinion.
    1. Overly hopped beers
    2. Barrel Age
    3. Higher Alcohol %

Because then they'd be like every other brewery that's out right now that feels they MUST barrel age everything!

I put it this way, either one of two things 1.) The overall beer as a whole is shite' 2.) You slapping the words "Barrel Aged" on it in hopes that people buy your shite' beer while charging a few dollars more.

Founders is by far one of my favorite breweries. The Imperial Stout is a good beer on it's own, and there's no reason for them to even consider it.

It is real easy to tell which posters have not read the entire thread before posting. They had not only considered it, they did it.

I haven't had KBS or CBS, but I was pretty underwhelmed by the aging in Doom.

Founders already has the largest stock of bourbon barrels for a brewery in the country so:
    1. It ain't broke
    2. they're up against barrel capacity

Why isn't Founders Imperial Stout Bourbon aged?

Because it's not friggin' bourbon! It's beer.

I honestly don't think this is anywhere close to being true. I can't imagine Goose Island's barrel program is anything less than 200% the combined size of Firestone, Founders, and Bruery's barrel programs. I don't doubt they've already reached their current capacity but in terms of size I don't think any barrel program is even in the same league as Goose's.

But I'm sure you have no problem with the sour trend.

Goose did 3000 barrels of the 5 BCS beers this year (their only real BB beer) while Founders did 3200 of KBS and Backwoods (which is 80% of their barrel production). A lot of Goose's barrels are wine barrels i'd assume as well.

KBS is an entirely different base beer

I've been told by a very reputable source (viz. someone who works for Founders) that KBS and Imperial Stout have a VERY similar base. Like, close enough that you couldn't tell a difference. So yes, KBS is basically BA Imperial Stout with adjuncts.

As I have stated before it's not that FIS isn't fantastic, if you read some of my other replies, I stated that I didn't want to ever replace FIS, in my mind a BBA'd version of a current base offering is always nice to try. The reason why I started this thread is because IMO FIS is the best impy stout I've had, whether some of you disagree with me is beside the point, my point is I am just curious what it would taste like BBA'd, I can't wonder and get excited at the thought? As Moshea had pointed out, they have actually performed a BBA on FIS and sold it at the pub, so it's not like they hadn't had the exact same train of thought I did, but I wouldn't have known this without starting this thread, which is the point of these forums to find out information and opinions.

I also heard this multiple times....

In fact, I use to have a link that said it WAS 'FIS' just BA'ed.... I remember winning multiple bets with beer nerds who thought KBS was simply 'BA Breakfast Stout'

In short...They do, it comes out in April and people kill each other over it.

So the real question is.... Why not try BA'ing FBS?
