interesting, I hadn't thought about it being MLK day. I won't have that day off. I've never seen them tap any out-of-the-ordinary beer at the sports grill, but it would make sense, I hope they do.

A good friend shared a bottle of CBS with a few others, blind, back in 2011. He didn't tell us what it was. We all thought it was good, ok, but nothing mind blowing. Then he showed us the bottle. We didn't get while people were going ape shit over it at the time (well, ape shit in 2011, "ape shit" has since reached a whole new level) anyhow, as other's in this discussion have already mentioned, hype is real, and it affects your experience, remove it, and it's a different taste experience. As also mentioned, taste is also subjective too, and even not blind, the beer's "worth" is also individual, and realitive.

Either way OP, hope you enjoy your experience, and the beer equally. Cheers

Great beer, but definitely not worth all the hassle nowadays. Back when I had my '11 bottles, I actually enjoyed that year's and previous year's KBS more, but alas, the past few batches of KBS have been lackluster.

I don't really keep up with the craft beer hype anymore, but I was curious after coming back to this site after a (very) long break:

Can someone enlighten me as exactly what to expect if one were to attempt to get a pour of CBS at an announced release at a popular bar? Long lines? A few dozen people? A few hundred? Getting shut out?

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to reply.

Not Churchkey... But you could head over to Ballston on Saturday the 17th for Rustico's tapping of the second keg. I got a table for 11:00AM when they open and I recommend you do the same.

Fresh: yes definitely worth going out of your way to try for the first time. Aged: not so much.

On a side note, how do you like ChurchKey? I've heard good things, and I'd be interested in checking it out the next time I'm in DC.

It's part of a Founders Tap Takeover, so it will surely be in the sports grill.

I walked into a grocery store in Michigan that does growler fills. $5 for a 5 oz pour they had it as a DONK. No waiting, no hassle, no issues. It's a great beer, I would love to have bottles of it. But as most have said its not worth the waiting or hassle to get at a release.

There is nothing like a nice pour of CBS. Why? Because there is nothing like it in the beer world. (At least as far as I know.) There are only a few maple syrup producers that age their product in bourbon barrels, so the potential for this beer to go into large production is nil due to the scarcity of these barrels. (Go out and buy some BBA maple syrup, folks, that will help a little bit.)

I have not read a good description of the pure taste enjoyment of this beer, and it really doesn't matter because you can't enjoy a wordy description anyway. (I've had this beer, but I can't write a description.) Thus if you can't experience this beer vicariously, it remains an unknown experience to those who have not had it. No one likes to take a chance on an 'unknown' but hype causes this beer to be a good unknown, and that means that one has to experience it to know exactly what it's like.

I'll wait to vote, but I'll never wait for a beer.

My concern with CBS is that when it came out several years ago it was amazing and almost groundbreaking. its was great several years ago but this new batch may not hold up to some of the beers being produced now like toppling Goliath stouts, db huna, Mexican cake varieties...
