Why isn't Founders Imperial Stout Bourbon aged?

because the coffee flavor would fade into an undesirable taste in the barrels. It is easier and tastier to add the coffee after barrel aging like Goose Island does with Bourbon County Coffee.

Yeah I missed your bourbon qualifier, obviously if you take out their Belgian barreled beers their barrel project is much closer to Founders'.

I would love to see FIS BA. Probably my favorite RIS.

Also I don't believe BA'ing a beer is trying to fix it in most cases. BA FIS would be more like rotating the tires, not reinventing wheel.

I don't know why they don't barrel age it, but I know why I don't want them to.
I don't want a world-class russian imperial stout that I can always find year-round (which is a big thing for my area) turning into a who-knows BA stout that wouldn't be allocated to my area at all.

Or is it the oatmeal? The label reads.... "Ale brewed with chocolate and coffee aged in bourbon barrels."

Regardless, I was sort of asking it rhetorically... What I really would like to see is a backstage of 'PBBS' that's right... Peanut Butter Breakfast Stout! #YUM

Were you really find FIS year round in PA? Last year it was gone around here come spring and has already sold out at a bunch of local stores. I'm stocking up now to get me to next winter.

There's usually some always sitting at the one shop I go to, at least in singles if not packs.

    Right.
The funny thing is that historically, brewers used to go to great lengths to keep the barrel taste out of the finished brews. LOL

Because it's a great beer and doesn't need any "help". There are tons of BA options- too many really. The real answer is that there need to be stouts to drink right now, not BA and BBA behemoths that need to "calm" down to even begin to be really tasty. Too many folks just love to be slammed with big flavor rather than to enjoy more subtle and readily available bigger beers. Big huge flavor alone does not make a beer good. Barrel aging is all the rage, but it will calm down at some point.

An interesting idea, but I'd be happy if they'd leave FIS alone and simply use the barrels to make more KBS.

I've heard this as well, and would be really curious to find out how true it is. As a matter of fact, if I remember correctly, what I read basically said that FIS is the base beer for KBS. That said, I don't not remember where I read that, nor do I have any idea how valid that information is.

Because not all craft beer lovers like barrel aged beers.

I don't think you could possibly improve FIS.

I have to basically agree with the majority here that there isn't really a reason to barrel age it and release it in bottles. While it would be interesting, Founders already releases KBS every year, another barrel aged IS would be redundant if just simply BBA, not to mention that unless it were bottled in the same capacity KBS is (likely impossible), it would never reach anyone other than those with connections in beer distribution, as KBS is hard enough to get as is.

However, there is always room for an interesting Backstage release, such as FIS with chocolate and cherries (sort of like Big Lushious with Cerise mixed with FIS rather than FBS and Rubaeus)? Maybe toss that in barrels if you want to make it more interesting (cmon Founders, listen to me  ).

I'd love to see a barrel-aged version as long as they continue to make the original. I have aged founders imperial for a year, and even in that short time span, the flavor was greatly improved. I would love to see what barrel aging would to the flavor.

Barrel age it! There are not enough barrel aged beers to go around. I can usually find 1 or 2 quality barrel aged beers (Bourbon County, Big Bad Baptist, Backwoods Bastard) from Fall through early Spring. I would like more readily available options that are good.

Late Spring through early Fall it is difficult to find quality barrel aged beers. The only one I usually see is Hoppin Frog. OP is not asking for them to do away with their RIS. I don't see what the problem would be.
