From what I heard the diacetyl becomes more prominent the longer it sits in the can and they're working on fixing it

I really don't think there is a concerted effort to tank the ratings on this beer. As has been mentioned several times here there were real problems with the butterscotch flavor overrunning many cans. The one I tried suffered from it. I didn't post a rating here but had I given it a low rating there would be nothing manipulative about it. It would have been honestly earned because the beer's quality was poor. I do think the basis for a strong IPA is there but I can't rate based on a wish of what might be, only what I have tasted for myself. I think Grey Sail puts out quality product on the whole, and I hope they get the problems ironed out, but I'm not going back to Captain's Daughter anytime soon on the hope that it's fresh enough not to taste like a sundae topping.

Additionally, the beer currently has three ratings of less than 3 by BA members. Three out of 249 total ratings. The member score is 96. It is being rated as one of the greats you want to see it be by the people who have enjoyed it.

All of that aside, if you love the beer and want to drink it regularly then the ratings of others, good or bad, are not of any real consequence.

Not trying to bash a brewery and I've never had the beer but what's so hard to fix? Diacetyl shouldn't be a problem in an IPA unless they are using a yeast like Ringwood which is notorious for diacetyl and IMO isn't good for IPAs anyway. Typically it's a result of poor fermentation or not giving the yeast enough time to clean up. Or longer boil if using a high percentage of pilsner malt. Hopefully they'll figure it out as I look forward to trying it.

Well like I said the 4 pack I bought was very fresh. Looking back through my Untappd check in I drank it on 12/14 and it was marked with a 12/8 canning date, so 6 days old. Not sitting in the can long at all, and the buttery flavor was overwhelming. I could not stand it.

Must be something in the canning process. I've had it on tap several times and it's been absolutely great with no sign of the off buttery flavors. Waiting for positive feedback in this thread before purchasing cans again.

Curious where this can be found in southern CT. Heading down to New Haven tomorrow and would love to score some. I wonder if the Wine Thief carries this?

Nikkis Liquors in RI had some a few hours ago. I grabbed the last 4 pack of one case and they only got 2. He said it would be gone within an hour so im not sure if they still have it.

Spiritus Fermenti in RI also has some. I asked the guy if there was a limit he said no, it was then i realized it was from the 11/25 batch so i played it safe and just grabbed 1 because i heard about the diacetyl issue. But for people who are desperately seeking it and want to take the risk, i would go to spiritus fermenti. he mentioned having 2 full cases.

    Hope this helps.

First had this a few weeks back and I had a diacetyl issue like others have said. Picked up another at CBC Westford so we'll see how this one goes. I was ready to write it off but the reviews here made me think to try it again.

It's the 12/22 batch. I got some from the same place. Not getting diacetyl but not blown away either for $13/4-pack.

The date is stamped on a sticker that is attached to the plastic four pack holder. It's the same for all of their beers.

I see. Well that place Spiritus Fermenti in rhode island is highly overpriced, especially for an older batch. We were having a good conversations and then he went back to grab it and i told him to grab me however much he could sell me. Guy was going to sell me the case, but then i saw the date and said i would stick with just 1. Thank god because when i saw the price i almost walked out. But i did not want to offend him and i just went through with the purchase. Hopefully it turns out to be a good 4 pack and i dont get any off flavors.

    Nice! I did the same!

Did you (or anyone) get any diacetyl from this batch? this was my first time having this beer and though i thought it tasted great, i kept thinking in the back of my head it had an off taste. I dont have much experience with these off-flavors so im not sure exactly how to pin-point it. Just wanted others opinions.

I have some from the 11/23 batch as well so im going to taste those and compare it.

I have dug this beer ever time I had it, but I opened a 1/6 can last night and it seemed off. My buddy and I both thought it smelled a bit worty and there was some diacetyl going on. I'm hopeful it's just a bad can, but it certainly tasted off.
